Annapolis Musicians Fund for Musicians, Inc. (AMFM), a nonprofit organization that supports professional Annapolis musicians, awarded its first Tim King Music Scholarship of $5,000 to Chesapeake High School senior Elisabeth Engelmeyer. This fall, Engelmeyer will enroll as a freshman at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where she intends to pursue a bachelor’s degree in music performance.
“Tim King was one of our community’s beloved musicians and entertainers,” says AMFM President Matt McConville. “He was also a gifted guitar teacher. This new scholarship honors Tim’s legacy by providing support to a future musician.”
Engelmeyer, a vocalist who has been singing nearly all of her life, has performed in high school, all-county, and all-state choruses, as a soloist in a jazz quartet, and at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore. She teaches voice to elementary school students and sings for the infirm in retirement homes and hospitals. While she plans to study classical music, she is open to all opportunities, from opera to Broadway.
Candidates were evaluated on several criteria—including their participation during high school in music performance groups, volunteer music opportunities in their communities, and private lessons—to assess their commitment to pursing music academically. “Our entire applicant pool was not only very talented but also incredibly articulate in expressing their passion for music and the important role it plays in their lives,” says McConville. “We are so pleased to have launched this program, and we plan to continue it on a yearly basis.”
AMFM was created to provide temporary financial relief to professional Annapolis musicians who cannot work due to sickness, injury, or any other circumstance leaving them unable to perform. The organization raises funds through donations and music events such as the AMFM Christmas Show. Its next show, “In the Vane of Bob Marley,” will be held on June 4 at Rams Head On Stage.
