Bats quiet as Squirrels blank the Baysox in Richmond

The Bowie Baysox (6-5) had their chances, but managed just four hits in a 1-0 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (9-3) on Tuesday night at The Diamond in Richmond.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the ninth, the Baysox had runners at first and second with one away, but RHP Caleb Simpson (1.0 IP, 2 BB, K) got Ademar Rifaela to groundout and caught Mike Yastrzemski looking at strike three to end the game. Simpson notched his third save of the year.

Flying Squirrels starter Shaun Anderson (2-1) allowed four hits while walking one and fanning four in six innings of work. RHP Mike Connolly (2.0 + IP, BB, 2 K) had a scoreless outing in relief of Anderson.

Richmond grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the second as Jerry Sands reached on a one-out infield single, stole second and scored later in the frame on Ali Castillo’s two-out RBI single.

Bowie starter John Means (0-1) was dealt the tough-luck loss after giving up one run on four hits to go along with a walk and six strikeouts over 6.0 IP.

The Baysox had runners at second and third with nobody out in the second, but Anderson got out of the jam as Rifaela was erased at home on a 3-2 fielder’s choice and Martin Cervenka grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.

In the top of the sixth, Cedric Mullins drew a one-out walk, but was thrown out at the plate as the potential tying run on Corban Joseph’s double to right to keep it a 1-0 game in favor of the hosts.

RHP Ryan Meisinger (2.0 IP, 2 H) had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The series continues on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. as RHP Jordan Kipper (1-0, 3.38) gets the start for Bowie against Richmond RHP Jordan Johnson(1-1, 3.86).
