Aid Our Veterans
Aid Our Veterans is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization working to help homeless and out of work veterans of our military service, currently in the Mid-Atlantic area of the country. We supply hot meals, clothes, blankets, tents, and other supplies to those who are on the streets, until they are ready to seek help for themselves. We find work and place Veterans in need in those jobs. We offer training programs and workshops. We have a thrift store, donation center, and office at our Annapolis location offering a variety of volunteer opportunities for adults. We also attend many local events and need volunteers at our information and fundraising booths at such events. Volunteers have flexibility in scheduling service and any amount of time is appreciated. Annapolis High School, December 11-13, 2017: Mock Interviews
Volunteers are needed to conduct Mock Interviews and provide Career Guidance for all 11th-grade students at Annapolis High on December 11-13, 2017 from 7:30 am to 2:15pm. Help them cultivate real world experience, taking the topics introduced in 11th-grade English of résumé writing, interviewing, and networking and practicing them with YOU, our community partners. Box of Rain
Monday, Oct. 30, 2017, 6 – 10 PM, Mentoring Program Information Session: Box of Rain invites those interested in learning about mentoring and a new Navigating Futures Mentoring Program to attend this session at Heritage Baptist Church, 1740 Forest Dr., Annapolis, MD. If you’re looking to make a big difference in a child’s life and can commit 4-6 hours a month of 1:1 volunteer time, consider becoming a Charting Careers Navigator. This new program matches kids with mentors who will shepherd them through their formative years, encourage their participation in Charting Careers and other extracurricular activities, and help them stay on track in school and in life. Come learn about the program and see if it’s right for you! Box of Rain’s Charting Careers program serves 100 children from Annapolis public and subsidized housing in grades 5 through 12. The program is staffed by more than a dozen part-time program leads who are guidance counselors, teachers, and college advisors. In the early years, we help children discover their inner strengths and interests. In the middle school years, they begin exploring career options, while pursuing their interests through extra-curricular activities. By 8th grade, we’re taking them on college tours and helping them develop the soft skills required to succeed in life. And in high school, our intensive programming works with them 1:1 to plan and achieve a career path. This new Navigating Futures mentoring program will provide critical support for our children as they progress through this program and we’re consulting with Sister Circle—a highly successful mentoring program in Baltimore—to develop a program here in Annapolis that will produce real outcomes. AFS-USA
Helping to bring the people of the world together is exciting, interesting, and rewarding work. For more than 60 years AFS (formerly American Field Service) Volunteers have been building bridges of intercultural understanding and changing the way the world works through a variety of volunteer opportunities. AFS-USA is looking for volunteers on an ongoing basis to engage in local activities for exchange students from all over the world. Volunteers participate in many ways from helping at student orientation events, planning weekend activities, promoting AFS study abroad programs to local schools and even becoming host families for our students. Maryland State Archives
The Maryland State Archives offers a variety of programs for volunteers to help assist Archives’ staff. We can generally accommodate as many or as few hours as you would like to volunteer. We are very flexible with scheduling. We have hours available Monday through Friday between 8:30 and 4:00. Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) Of Anne Arundel County
This Nonprofit agency provides job training and placement services to low income unemployed and underemployed residents of Anne Arundel County. A wide variety of volunteers are needed to assist and or teach basic computer, GED Preparations, English as a Second Language (ESL), resume writing, math skills, writing skills, job skills, job interviewing classes and much more. OIC is in need of volunteers to form a pool of instructors for our GED Prep classes. Office volunteers are also needed at the 2600 Solomons Island Road location. OHLA (Organization of Hispanics/Latin Americans of Anne Arundel County)
OHLA provides support, education and relief services to immigrant Hispanic-American families. Volunteers serve as Outreach Coordinators bridging existing gaps in areas such as health, jobs and other services needed by the community. Bi-lingual volunteers staff the Annapolis office located in the Community Resource Center at 80 West St., and assist Hispanic constituents with many issues ranging from immigration to interpreter services, training provided. The SPCA of Anne Arundel County is hosting Lights on the Bay for the first time! And they are looking for a little help to make it a success. They need 20 people on Sat, October 28th and Sunday the 29th and Sat, November 4th and Sunday the 5th, from 9am to 3pm at Sandy Point State Park, to help set up lights, make sure everything is working and to change bulbs. Wreaths Across America, Annapolis National Cemetery, December 16, 2017
Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project in 1992. Last year, Annapolis National Cemetery had a wreath on every single gravesite, it was breathtaking. This was possible through the hard work and generosity from individuals, organizations and businesses. There are approximately 3000 graves at Annapolis National Cemetery and the goal this year is to do it again – to have a wreath for each gravesite. The Annapolis community can make this happen. Wreath donations are being sought: Visit web site at: www.wreathsacrossamerica.org to sponsor a wreath for $15; designate the wreath to the Annapolis National Cemetery, Friends of Annapolis. Also, volunteers are needed the day of the ceremony to lay wreaths on the graves.
