Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams announced  that Lawrence Ervin Montague, 28, of Annapolis, was found guilty of second degree murder and related charges by an Anne Arundel County Circuit Court jury.

“Facing no threat to his own personal safety, Lawrence Montague committed an act of unjustifiable retribution,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams. “My office will work tirelessly to hold such violent offenders accountable for their actions.”
On January 16, 2017 at approximately 3:00 AM, Annapolis Police responded to a report of a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Upon investigation, police learned that Montague and the victim met in the area of 712 Newtowne Drive to conduct a drug transaction.
After the victim attempted to pay Montague with a counterfeit one hundred dollar bill, Montague engaged the victim in conversation and followed him to his car. Montague then removed a handgun from his waist area and fired multiple shots.
A single bullet entered the victim’s back, struck his heart, lungs, and stomach, and exited the center of his chest. The victim was transported to Anne Arundel Medical Center, where he subsequently died from his injuries.
A witness was present in the passenger seat of the victim’s car at the time of the incident, and identified Montague as the person responsible for the murder.
Montague faces up to 73 years in prison as a result of these convictions. Sentencing is scheduled for December 15, 2017.
Judge Paul F. Harris, Jr. presided over the case. Assistant State’s Attorneys David Ash and James Tuomey prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County.
