Mary Broughton joins Hospice of the Chesapeake

Mary BroughtonHospice of the Chesapeake recently announced that Mary Broughton, RN, has been promoted to Director of Inpatient Care Centers. The position was created to allow for a complete focus on the care of patients served by the Rebecca Fortney and Mandrin inpatient care centers.

Broughton brings to the position nearly 30 years of experience in the medical field, the majority spent in a variety of roles at Anne Arundel Medical Center. In September 2015, she joined the hospice organization as a clinical manager. As the nonprofit began to refresh and upgrade the Mandrin Inpatient Care Center in Harwood so that it could once again care for patients, Broughton was charged with leading the project.   The Mandrin Inpatient Care Center began accepting patients once again on Aug. 1. President and CEO Ben Marcantonio said that her leadership through the transition revealed her to be a compassionate professional with a clear sense of the balance between the acute care and psychosocial needs of patients at the end of life.

“Mary led our organization through this period of renewal with a contagious enthusiasm,” he said. “She has been reassuring throughout the process, guiding the team through a smooth transition and fully preparing them to care for patients needing acute hospice care.”

Each center is designed to provide the latest in acute healthcare and serve as an alternative to hospitalization when assisting those needing significant pain and symptom management at the end of life. With both centers fully operations, the organization is now able to provide expert, round-the-clock care for 22 patients at a time.

Broughton said the position fits in perfectly with her professional vision, as she can be an advocate for both patients and the team. Once again, she has the opportunity to work directly with patients every day. “Nursing at the bedside is where my passion is. It is where I feel called to lead,” she said.

A lifelong resident of the Annapolis area, Broughton lives in Grasonville with her husband and the two youngest of her four children.
