Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams announced that Eris Murray, 56, of Hanover, was sentenced by Judge Cathleen M. Vitale to 18 years in prison for sexual abuse of a minor, second degree sexual offense, and sodomy.
“Eris Murray was entrusted with a position in our community that allowed him access to our children, making both his crimes and his refusal to accept responsibility all the more heinous,” said Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney Wes Adams. “I am grateful to Judge Vitale for seeing past his excuses and providing a sentence that reflects the severity of his transgressions.”
On November 2, 2016, Anne Arundel County Police met with the victim, who disclosed that Eris Murray, the victim’s soccer coach and family friend, sexually abused him when he was between the ages of 8 to 12 years old. The abuse occurred in Murray’s home.
Despite defense counsel’s request for an 18 month sentence, the judge sentenced Murray to 35 years, suspending all but 18 years of active incarceration, with 5 years of supervised probation upon release. Murray will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
Judge Cathleen M. Vitale presided over the case. Assistant State’s Attorney Reva Chopra prosecuted the case on behalf of the citizens of Anne Arundel County.
