Ann Arrundell Historical Society

Sat,, October 7, 2017, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Fall Book Sale: Volunteers are needed to help move books from the basement of the Kuethe Library to the Glen Burnie Improvement Association Building next door from 3:30-5:30 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 5 in preparation for the Fall Book Sale being held on Sat. Oct. 7, 2017.  Additional volunteers are needed on Sat., Oct. 7, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. after the Book Sale to return unsold books to the Kuethe Library. Both tasks should take less than two hours. Friends of Kinder Farm Park: Fall Harvest Festival Saturday, October 14th, 2017

Volunteer adults, students (7th grade through college), families, and organized groups are needed to help with this year’s Annual Fall Harvest Festival being held on Sat., Oct. 14, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Give back to your community by helping people have a fun, enjoyable time! A variety tasks are available including:  help with setting up prior to the day of the event, working during the event, and cleaning up the day after the event. The Friends of Kinder Farm also have a variety of ways you can help out around the park throughout the year, from being a docent at the Farm House to tending the gardens. You can volunteer to help with a specific project or take part in projects that are ongoing. Lifeline 100 Century Ride & Community Health Fair at Kinder Farm Park, Sun., Oct. 1, 2017

Bicycle Advocates for Annapolis & Anne Arundel County (BikeAAA) in partnership with Anne Arundel County Police and Recreation & Parks Dept. is hosting the Lifeline100. There will be 100, 65, 30, and 15 mile (30 and 15 are all-trail)  rides and a free children’s bike rodeo and family fun ride; starting times begin at 7:00 a.m., Sun., Oct. 1, 2017 and are staggered throughout the day for various rides and events. 65 and 100 mile routes will wind throughout scenic Anne Arundel County including downtown Annapolis, the Severn River, Bay Ridge, southern Anne Arundel County, BWI/Marshall airport and the B&A Trail. There will also be a free “Make Health Happen” community health fair 12:30 – 2:30 by the Healthy Anne Arundel Coalition that day, all at Kinder Farm Park in Millersville; the fair will offer health screenings, fun activities for kids, families and more.  Volunteers, sponsors, and participants are being sought for this event. Volunteers are needed to help with parking, registration, rest stops, SAG support, children’s rodeo, and more.  Civic or high school age community service groups such as the scouts are also welcome to volunteer. Anne Arundel County States Attorney’s Office

Volunteers are needed to work on projects for the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office in its Annapolis and Glen Burnie locations. Work alongside support staff, victim witness advocates, and attorneys. Be a part of the team and make a difference in your community! We are looking for focused, analytical, detail-oriented individuals who enjoy solving puzzles. Computer literacy is a must and background checks are required. The Lost Towns Project

Join the Lost Towns Project on Gibson Island, where we will be conducting block excavations on 9/27, 9/28, 10/4, 10/5, 10/6, 10/12, 10/13, 10/19, and 10/20/17 to document a possible earthfast 17th century structure that is overlapping with 18th and 19th century structures. The Linniston earthfast dwelling, which could date as early as the mid-17th century, represents one of the most historically significant historic sites discovered in Anne Arundel County in the last three decades. The structure is believed to be directly connected to the William Worthington Family, as documented in historical records. In addition, please join us on Fri., 9/29/17, to prepare the Skipwith’s site in Harwood, MD for hibernation by backfilling the excavation areas. The Father Academy

The mission of The Father Academy is to enhance the lives and relationships of fathers with their children through peer mentoring, education, and support. The Academy is looking for fathers who feel like they’ve gotten a good handle on fatherhood, as well as fathers who want help. The Father Academy needs dads who are willing to commit to a 9-month program where they will provide each other peer mentoring and education based on the Responsible Fatherhood curriculum. Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults

Are you, or is someone you know, a super-awesome, challenge-driven, college-aged student?  If so, reach out to UCF!  We’re looking for the brightest and best young minds to help move our mission forward while gaining valuable work experience.  UCF Interns take on real-life projects while participating in a curriculum designed to give them a well-rounded experience, including meeting with leadership, participating in team meetings and trainings, and periodic opportunities for feedback.  Intern position may include graphic design and multimedia, event planning and logistics, and communications and marketing. The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults (UCF) provides free support programs, education, and resources to benefit young adults affected by cancer, as well as their family and friends, while promoting awareness and prevention of cancer. The UCF relies on volunteers to help us spread our message hope and fight. Winter Relief Program, mid-October through early April–Rotating Locations

About 70 Houses of Worship and a dozen partnering churches will provide sheltering sites together with Arundel House of Hope to support a shelter program from late October until early April.  For one week at a time, participating churches host men and women in need of a hot meal and shelter for the night and breakfast the next morning. The Winter Relief Program needs volunteers to assist at the Intake Center at 514 N. Crain Hwy. in Glen Burnie and to be transportation escorts for showers for our guests.
