A write-in candidate for Ward 4? Looks that way.

Toni Strong-Pratt

Toni Strong Pratt lost the Ward 4 primary election by 17 votes to an entrenched incumbent–Sheila Finlayson. And Pratt’s supporters are not giving up.

A write-in campaign, organized by her supporters, is well underway. This morning at 49 West, we spoke with the former candidate about it and she said she was not officially filing to run as a write-in candidate; but would not turn down the seat if she won it.

Pratt’s supporters, mostly residents in Woodside Gardens and Newtowne 20 feel largely ignored by the City and their elected alderwoman. “They don’t even know who she is,” said Pratt. Finlayson has often been criticized for having a cozy relationship with developers.

For now, Toni Pratt is not campaigning, but making sure that people get out and vote. Pratt continued, “We need to let these people know that they can make a difference. It won’t be swift, but piece by piece it will happen–they do not need to accept the status-quo.”

When questioned directly if she was campaigning for Ward 4, Pratt slyly replied, “I tell people to vote for who they feel will serve them best, and if that’s me; I am fine with that.”

So while the primary results showed that Finlayson should have a straight shot to re-election, it appears there maybe a curve-ball ahead.  Stay tuned, with a race as tight as it was, the end result could easily go either way!
