How Can a Health Coach Help You?

Are you feeling overwhelmed with all of the “health” trends out there?

Wondering which ones are actually worth following?

Along with new Superfoods, diets, and weight loss tricks, you also may have heard the term Health Coach floating around lately.

But, what exactly IS a Health Coach and why are more and more people seeking out their advice?

Health Coaching, also referred to as Wellness coaching, encompasses anything and everything that impacts your health, fitness and over all well-being. Health Coaches focus on the whole you – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Most of us have a vision of how we want to look or feel, but achieving those goals can be very challenging! This is where coaching can help.  A Health Coach is a supportive mentor who is professionally trained and certified to help clients achieve their goals through food and lifestyle changes. Similar to how athletes have coaches to push them to excel in sports, Health Coaches encourage their clients to reach and maintain personal health goals.

These goals may include:

  • Managing stress
  • Eating healthier
  • Weight management
  • Increasing energy levels
  • Reversing negative habits

A Health Coach is a Master of Habit Change.

So, what is a habit?  A habit is “an acquired behavior pattern regularly followed until it has become almost involuntary.” Many of our daily activities are habits – compulsively checking our phones/social media, snacking, biting our fingernails, binge eating, smoking, getting fast food, etc. We do these things absentmindedly because we are USED to doing them. Habits can be tough to change, and even harder to maintain.   In order to truly change a habit you must:

  1. Be motivated to change
  2. Identify the habit
  3. Understand why you are doing that habit
  4. Choose a healthy/positive alternative
  5. Commit and give yourself time to change

Breaking a habit simply means that you are breaking the link between a behavior and the reward it provides you. Unfortunately, there is no full-proof way to break or change a habit.  Although a Health Coach is great at providing guidance, motivation, healthy tips and tricks, and support, nobody can make you change unless you want to!

So, how long does it take to change, or adopt a new habit?

Most people will tell you “21 days!” without even thinking about it. However, this was a myth that started in the 1960s and is still present today. Newer evidence has found that on average, it takes about 66 days for a habit to become – well, a habit! Of course, your success depend on your willingness to change, the steps you have in place to help with this change, and finding the right information. It can definitely be overwhelming! Although 66 days is the average, it can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a new behavior to become automatic.

Why choose to work with a Health Coach?

Instead of taking a “one size fits all “ approach, Health Coaches develop individualized wellness programs that meet their clients’ needs. There are many factors that affect what works best for you – such as body type, schedule, access to resources, personal preferences and much more.   With hundreds of resources at our fingertips (thanks to the Internet) most of us know what to do in order to be healthy – eat more vegetables, exercise, sleep, etc. However, there is almost TOO much information readily available and it can be overwhelming. Also, just because many of us know WHAT to do in order to be healthy doesn’t mean that we are doing it.

This is where a Health coach can help!

Health coaches help narrow down what information is most beneficial to you and create a plan to achieve your goals one step at a time. One of the main reasons we tend to fall back into old patterns is because we try to change too much too fast. Health coaches also help with holding you accountable. This is HUGE because we tend to stick with something longer when we have guidance and someone to check in with.  With 1-1 coaching you get to develop a personal relationship with your coach and making lifestyle changes can actually be fun!

4 Signs You Could Benefit From Working With a Health Coach:

1.You want to improve your diet and lifestyle choices but don’t know where to start

2.You’re tired of trying diet after diet and not seeing or feeling desired results

3.You’re looking for a more personal approach to health care

4. You want to create long-lasting lifestyle changes
