Baysox bats fall silent in first game of Western Division Championship Series

The Bowie Baysox managed just one hit in a 2-0 loss to the Altoona Curve in Game One of the Western Division Championship Series on Wednesday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Altoona starter Mitch Keller (1-0) gave up one hit to go along with two walks and four strikeouts in a complete game effort.

Keller is the first pitcher to throw a complete game nine inning shutout against the Baysox since Altoona’s Adrian Sampson on July 18, 2014. The right-hander faced the minimum 27 batters.

Bowie’s lone hit of the game came on Cedric Mullins’ leadoff single in the fourth.

The game was scoreless until the top of the fifth as Keller and Baysox starter David Hess traded zeroes.

In the afore-mentioned top of the fifth, Cole Tucker reached with a one-out double and scored later in the frame onJordan George’s two-out RBI single to give the Curve a 1-0 lead.

Altoona extended the lead to 2-0 with an insurance run in the seventh as Casey Hughston drew a one-out walk, went to second on a single and scored on Mitchell Tolman’s RBI single.

Hess (0-1) allowed the two runs on seven hits while walking three and fanning five in 6.1 IP.

LHP Paul Fry (1.2 IP, H, 2 BB, 3 K) and RHP Scott McGough (1.0 IP, H, K) both had scoreless outings in relief for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The series continues with game two on Friday at 7:05 p.m. as LHP Tanner Scott (0-2, 2.22) will be on the bump for Bowie against Altoona RHP Alex McRae (10-5, 3.61).
