Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce

Office Volunteers Needed: The Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce needs volunteers to staff the front desk, answer phones and greet people from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., M-F at their office near Annapolis Towne Centre at Parole. Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank

Do you have a talent for selecting produce?  The Anne Arundel County Food Bank gets wonderful donations of fresh produce but lacks the staff to sort through the produce to weed out those “bad apples.” Come alone or bring your produce-loving friends.  They need support once or twice a week, and it would greatly help the Food Bank and the local food pantries.  What a great way to help others!  If interested, please contact Susan at[email protected] or call the Food Bank at 410-923-4255.

Founded in 1986, the Food Bank is the only free, multi-purpose Agency in Maryland that provides food, nutritional supplements, medical equipment, furniture, vehicles, appliances, and more to those in need, free of charge.  They support individuals and other non-profits.

 

Creating Communities

Consistent volunteers are needed during the school year for Creating Communities Tuesday Afternoon Learning Experience at Harbour House/Eastport Terrace and the Wednesday Afternoon Arts Club at Eastport United Methodist Church, each day 3:45pm-5:00pm, to help set up art supplies, STEM activities, help and mentor elementary school children and clean up. Creating Communities is also seeking new board members with community, volunteering and financial experience with a strong interest and passion for the power of the arts to transform the lives of low-income students living in Anne Arundel County. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

Sat., Sept. 9, 2017, 7:00 a.m., Jug Bay Eco Duathlon: Join Rec Deeds for Special Needs & the Friends of Jug Bay at River Farm, 6020 Pindell Rd., Lothian, MD 20711 for the First Annual Jug Bay Eco Duathlon. Enjoy the forested trails of Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary for a 2 mile run followed by a 1 mile paddle in the Patuxent River. Once back to shore you will finish up the race with another 2 mile run. Race as an individual or grab a teammate for the race. Proceeds will go to support Rec Deeds for Special Needs as well as field trips at Jug Bay. Participant Registration at: https://tinyurl.com/jugbayduathlon is limited to the first 100 individuals and/or teams. Packet pick up will be on race day starting at 7am. Race starts at 8am. Volunteers are needed to man water stations, guides along trails, transition area assistance (carrying kayaks and paddle boards to launch site), in water safety team, check in desk and more. Project Green 9/11 Day of Service, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017

To commemorate Marylanders who have lost their lives in service to their country, including on 9/11, the Volunteer Center celebrates a Day of Service. The day will begin at 8:30 am on Sat., Sept. 9, 2017 with a brief ceremony at the Maryland World War II Memorial located in the median at 1920 Ritchie Highway, Route 450, Annapolis, MD 21403. Volunteer sign-in begins at 8:00 am. From 9:00 am until noon, volunteers will participate in environmental service projects beginning at the WW II Memorial and continuing to Jonas Green Park at the foot of the Naval Academy Bridge. This is a “rain or shine event” and will only be delayed or cancelled if there are local thunder storms. In addition to weeding, planting and mulching to control storm water runoff, we will participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) as volunteers record items of debris they find, giving a clearer picture of the items impacting the health of the Chesapeake Bay. St. Mary’s Church English as a Second Language (ESL) Program

Saturday, August 19, 2017, 9:00AM – 12:30PM, Teacher Training Session: St. Mary’s ESL Program is holding its fall Teacher Training session for new teachers interested in volunteering for the 2017-2018 school year. St Mary’s ESL Program needs volunteers to teach English one night a week to adult ESL students for the Sept–May school year.  The 8 levels of classes (new beginners to advanced) are held on Tues., Wed., and Thurs. evenings, 7:00-8:45 PM. First semester classes begin Tuesday, September 12, 2017 through Thursday, December 7, 2017 at St. Mary’s High School in downtown Annapolis. Those students enrolling in the classes must register on September 5th or 6th from 7:00 to 9:00PM, also at St Mary’s High School. Each teacher is asked to commit to one class/one night a week and will be part of a teaching team. Spanish-language ability is preferred for beginner classes only. Volunteers with ESL or any teaching experience as well as those with a keen interest in working with students to help them learn/perfect their English are encouraged to apply. Start The Adventure In Reading (STAIR)

STAIR is a one-on-one reading program geared to help 2nd graders currently reading below grade level. STAIR has worked with Anne Arundel County schools for 12 years. For one hour, two days a week after school, tutors read, practice phonics, and work on fluency and comprehension with their student. Learning occurs in a safe, nurturing environment and a bond is forged between tutor and student. STAIR has seven sites in Annapolis and sites in Edgewater, Severn, and Crofton, MD. We are currently looking for one and two day a week tutors as well as substitute tutors for all sites. Sites are open either Tuesday/Thursday or Tuesday/Wednesday. Training is provided. Nation’s Triathlon, Washington, DC, September 8-10, 2017

4:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Sun., September 10, 2017, Nation’s Triathlon: Many volunteer opportunities are available to support this Olympic Distance and Sprint Distance Triathlon that starts at 7:00 a.m. in West Potomac Park. This is a swim, bike, run event. The swim will take place in the Potomac River, the bike will follow along the streets of DC, and runners will do a loop around Hains Point to finish along Ohio Drive at a finish line festival. The roads will be closed to vehicles. Volunteers are needed at the Start Line, Finish Line, and out on the course at Aid Stations.

Help is also needed at the Packet Pick Up being held from 2:00 – 7:00 p.m. Fri., September 8 and 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., Sat., September 9, in Washington, DC. All volunteers get a Ride Crew t-shirt, snacks, drinks and community service hours.
