Baysox hang on to snatch a win in series finale against Portland

Baysox FieldThe Bowie Baysox (62-57) broke the game open with a three-run seventh en route to an 8-6 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (57-60) in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

In the afore-mentioned three-run seventh, Anthony Santander delivered a solo shot off of RHP Jacob Dahlstrand (1.0 + IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB), while Audry Perez and Erick Salcedo came through with RBI singles to extend the Bowie lead to 7-2.

Trailing 7-4, Portland brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the eighth, but RHP Scott McGough fanned Michael Chavis to wiggle his way out of the jam. Danny Bethea and Chad De La Guerra both plated runs with RBI singles earlier in the frame.

McGough (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, BB, 4 K) got the final six outs to notch his eighth save of the season.

The Baysox grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as an infield single and a hit by pitch put two men on before DJ Stewart and Aderlin Rodriguez delivered consecutive two-out RBI singles.

In the home half of the second, Austin Hays came through with a two-out, two-run single to right to stretch the Bowie lead to 4-0.

Portland cut the lead to 4-1 with a run in the fifth as Bethea led off with a double and scored later in the frame on De La Guerra’s RBI single.

The Sea Dogs got within 4-2 in the sixth via Cole Sturgeon’s RBI single. They had runners at first and second with two outs in the frame, but RHP Ryan Meisinger got Deiner Lopez to ground to first and end the inning.

Baysox starter Lucas Long (8-5) gave up two runs on nine hits while fanning seven in 5.2 IP.

Portland starter Kevin McAvoy (5-7) surrendered four runs on seven hits to go along with two walks and six strikeouts in five innings of work.

Meisinger (1.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB) worked out of trouble again in the seventh as Portland had two men on with two away, but Henry Urrutia lined to second to end the frame.

DJ Stewart’s solo shot in the eighth stretched the Baysox lead to 8-4. The home run was Stewart’s 17thof the season.

Sturgeon got Portland within a pair in the ninth with a two-out, two-run shot.

Hays (2-5, 2 RBI, R), Rodriguez (4-5, 2 2B, RBI, R), Santander (2-4, HR, RBI, 2 R) and Stewart (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R) all had multi-hit games for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The Baysox will have an off day on Monday before opening a three-game set with the Reading Fightin Phils on Tuesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading. First pitch of the series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. with RHP David Hess (9-8, 4.17) on the mound for Bowie against Reading LHP Elniery Garcia(0-0, 2.25).
