The Aleph Bet Jewish Day School may not open this year.  The school has been struggling for several years and an unexpected drop in enrollment over the summer have put the school on life support.

In an email sent out by a Board Member, the situations severity was spelled out.

Our wonderful 29 year Jewish Day School in Annapolis has had a decline in enrollment over the last few years and had an unexpected drop this summer that broke the school’s fragile back. In just four days we have raised about $110,000 from parents, grandparents, friends and generous people throughout our community to save the school. If you know anything about Aleph Bet, you would know that it is quite special as it intertwines Jewish teachings and values with a top secular curriculum. In a small Jewish community this school is foundational to keeping Judaism alive for the next generation.

If you are able please make a donation to our GoFundMe campaign. Thank you

The school has struggled over the years and there has been some infighting among the school leaders as to the direction of the school. According to one member of the Synagogue who asked not to be named, “there was new blood coming in that met with resistance from the old guard and there was no leadership in place to affect the changes needed.”

We have been unable to confirm if the school will open this year or not. However, according to the GoFundMe campaign, (which is featured prominently on the school’s website) it seems that the school does not plan to open on September 5th, their planned date.

Annapolis Mayor, Mike Pantelides attended the school.
