Two high school culinary teams invited to cook for Governor’s Cookout

ProStart culinary teams from Annapolis and Northeast high schools will be the first high school participants at the 10th annual Governor’s Buy Local Cookout to be held later this month by invitation only.

Earlier this year, Governor Hogan challenged chefs and food producers from across the state to submit original recipes that showcase the vast variety (and deliciousness) of Maryland products. Among the 45 recipe submissions, 19 (including Annapolis and Northeast) were selected.

Annapolis HS’s “Eastern Shore Caviar” will be prepared for the event, featuring ingredients from Anne Arundel County producers Deana Tice of En-Tice-Ment Farm Raised Meats for eggs; Chris Grava of Annapolis Seafood for crabmeat; and Gina Schillinger of Schillinger Farm for tomatoes, red onions, scallions, and spinach.

The team from Northeast HS will share its “Pistachio-Crusted Rockfish with Tomato Concassé” recipe that includes rockfish from the Kent Island Crab Company.

ProStart is a hands-on culinary education program for high school students, giving them access and “opportunity to learn about the art of cooking and managing restaurants by training with professional chefs and getting valuable classroom instruction.”
