Registration open for the 2017 Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run

The 2017 Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run, scheduled for 2 p.m., Sunday, September 17, at the Navy-Marine Corp Memorial Stadium, is now open for registration at http://www.travismanion.org/tmf_911run_race/annapolis-911-heroes-run/.

Hosted by the Travis Manion Foundation, the Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run includes a 5K and 1M Family Fun Run that unites the community in remembering the sacrifices of the heroes of the September 11th attacks and in the wars since. Proceeds support the Foundation’s programs assisting veterans and families of fallen service members, and promoting character among today’s youth.

“This year marks the 10th anniversary of when Travis was killed in action in Iraq while saving his wounded teammates,” said Race Director Natanya Levioff. “There is no better way to honor his memory than by gathering the community to show appreciation for our local first responders and the men and women who protect our country.”

Levioff continued, “We are especially humbled to have Travis’ former commanding officer, LtCol (retired) Joel Poudrier, U.S. Marine Corps, as our special guest speaker.”

Entering its ninth season, the Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run marked its highest participation to date last year with over 2,000 runners, families and volunteers in attendance.

This year’s event will also see its largest involvement from local first responders including the Anne Arundel County Police Department, the Annapolis Police Department, the Annapolis Fire Department and the Naval District of Washington Fire Department.

“We are honored to partner with the Travis Manion Foundation for the Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run,” said Anne Arundel County Police Chief Timothy Altomare. “As a Marine veteran, I know the importance of connecting service members, veterans and first responders to our communities.”

Presenting sponsor partners for this year’s Run are USAA and Annapolis Cars. “We are, once again, proud to support the Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run and honor all those who served our nation, including those like Travis Manion, who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said USAA Service Academy Relations Adviser CAPT Paul McElroy, USN (Ret).

Added Michele Eichhorn, Marketing Director for Annapolis Cars, “Our Annapolis Cars Family is honored to return as a sponsor of the 2017 Annapolis 9/11 Heroes Run. This fantastic event allows us to come together with our community to honor the sacrifices made by the fallen, to support their families and to celebrate the everyday heroics of our military, civilian and first responders.”

Additional returning and new sponsor partners include: Mission BBQ, the Naval Academy Athletic Association, Fleet Feet, Naval Bagels, Starbucks, the Bob Lucido Team of Keller Williams, Power Home Modeling, FESCO and Michael Underwood – Northwestern Mutual-The Annapolis Group.

“The generosity of our local sponsors has allowed us to create a memorable experience that participants and our community look forward to every year,” said Levioff. “Our partners are the primary reason we are able to put on such an inspiring 9/11 Heroes Run in Annapolis that properly represents and helps support the Travis Manion Foundation, and we are profoundly grateful to them.”

The 9/11 Heroes Run series was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, a Naval Academy graduate, who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in April 2007 while saving his wounded teammates. Before his final deployment, Travis visited Rescue One in NYC—famous for losing almost all of their men on 9/11—and returned home with a deeper passion about why he was fighting in Iraq. Shortly after his death, his mother, the late Janet Manion, established a foundation in his name to empower our nation’s veterans and families of the fallen to develop character in future generations.

The 9/11 Heroes Run has spread from a small grassroots gathering with a few hundred people in one small community in Pennsylvania in 2007 to one that spans over 50 cities in the United States and around the world.

The Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) is a qualified 501(c)(3) that is re-defining America’s national character and strengthening communities one at a time. The Foundation’s vision is a nation of purpose-driven individuals who thrive by living with character and using their strengths and passions to serve others; therefore embodying the words that Travis spoke before leaving for his second and final deployment: “If Not Me, Then Who…”
