James Kitchin to run for District 7 County Councilmanic seat

James KitchinJames Kitchin of Crofton, Maryland has filed to run as a Democrat for the Anne Arundel County Council in District 7. He will have a campaign kick-off event on Thursday, July 13 in Crofton.

James grew up in Crofton, graduated from Arundel High School in 2003, and then earned a BA in Business Administration from Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, California where he met his lovely wife, Lauren. James also has Masters Degrees in International Relations and Education/Political Science. James is a former high school history and government teacher who left the classroom a couple of years ago to pursue a PhD in Public Policy. James currently conducts policy research in the fields of education and immigration at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and is half-way done with his doctoral degree, focusing on local governments in metropolitan areas, at UMBC. James is a member of the Association for Education Finance and Policy and the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. James and Lauren have two children: Isabela (age 7) and Morgan (age 4). James is involved in the community in the ways that a 32-year-old dad of 2 typically is. He attends a local church and volunteers in their children’s program, coaches his daughter’s soccer team, is a member of the PTA at Crofton Woods Elementary School, and is an active volunteer in his kids’ classrooms.

James is running for office because he believes that our political system is broken at every level and that the solutions must start locally. Further, the solutions must be introduced in a way that brings both empathy and evidence into our public discourse. Empathizing with each other’s perspectives, even when we disagree, is vital; as is making fact-based policy decisions. James’ campaign will focus on (1) local quality of life issues, (2) education, and (3) political voice. Local quality of life includes focusing on fixing the traffic issues that currently plague the county, land-use, the environment, and supporting our first responders. Education includes focusing on consistently and predictably raising teachers’ pay so that we can compete with the surrounding counties, pushing for smaller class sizes, and funding state-of-the-art vocational programs for the students that won’t go to college. By political voice James means passing campaign finance reform, increasing transparency, and soliciting citizen’s opinions by consistently hosting town-halls. We need to change the process to make it dependent on the people. Until we do that, the quality of our county government will continue to vary based on the character of our elected officials and the size of the donations made by elite individuals.
