Hays sliding catch finishes off 5-4 win

Baysox FieldThe Baysox moved to two games up in the Eastern League’s West with a dramatic 5-4 win Friday night in Altoona. The win was a seventh consecutive over the Curve and an eighth in nine overall with Altoona in 2017.

Trailing 3-2 in the eighth inning, the Baysox battled back. Austin Hays, who had homered prior, doubled to center to leadoff the frame. Garabez Rosa then singled him home to tie the game and DJ Stewart followed with another single and the Baysox were in business. Later in the frame, with the bases loaded, Jeff Kemp came through with an RBI-single to center to give Bowie a 4-3 lead. The Baysox got a huge insurance run on Erick Salcedo’s bouncer over a drawn in infield to go up 5-3.

Altoona rallied in the ninth. Garrett Cleavinger walked two men with one down and manager Gary Kendall went to the pen to summon Scott McGough. McGough got five outs throwing 28 pitches on Thursday evening. But he was up to the task.

He got a flyout for the second out but Jerrick Suiter singled home a run making it 5-4 with runners at the corners. Baysox Field Coach Butch Davis brought the left and centerfielders in shallow and it paid off. Left-handed hitting Jin De Jhang lined a ball to center. Austin Hays, already shallow, got there with a sliding catch to end the game.

The Baysox got six strong innings from John Means allowing three runs, two of which earned.

Matt Grimes (4-8) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief out of the pen. Aderlin Rodriguez hit his 14thhome run of the year with a tape measure shot to left in the sixth inning. Hays’s home run in the third was his fourth of the year with Bowie and 20th overall this season at all levels.

The series continues with RHP Jesus Liranzo on the mound for the 6:00 p.m. start on Saturday night, July 15th.  Coverage will begin 20-minutes prior to first pitch on wnav.com, baysox.com and via the WNAV, MILB and Tune-In Radio Apps.
