Dyslexia Tutoring Program

This nonprofit organization trains volunteers to tutor low-income children and adults with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. Volunteers should have a high school diploma, good language skills, patience, a willingness to understand persons with language disabilities, and the desire to help someone who wants to learn to read. Volunteer tutors are trained through a twenty-hour course in the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading, spelling, and writing, are subject to a criminal background check and must commit to 60 hours of tutoring. Eastport Yacht Club Foundation (EYCF)

The EYC Foundation’s long-term vision connects kids with educational opportunities through sailing & boating.  EYCF programming raises awareness about marine & maritime career opportunities and about stewardship of our Bay, oceans, lakes and rivers. Programs include: 5th grade STEM through Sailing & Boating; an annual Marine & Maritime Career Fair for grades 6-12+; scholarships for Jr. Sailing summer camps and Marine & Maritime Scholarships for college or technical training schools.  Bi-annually, we honor Outstanding Marine Wizards in our community. EYC Foundation is seeking Teacher/Instructors with a passion for teaching/boating/sailing to join our 5th Grade “STEM through Sailing & Boating” program.  We partner with Anne Arundel County Public Schools, and each year we host Title I Elementary schools during late May-early June in Eastport.  This program also travels to other communities around the Bay where organizations partner with local elementary schools. Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble

Footworks Ensemble is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to operate and manage a full-time professional troupe that performs and teaches multi-cultural percussive dance with live acoustic music for theaters, arts festivals, schools, and community events. Current volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: Photography, Tech Support, Filing/Office Work, fundraising, archiving, and arts administration. Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, Sat. Sept. 23, 2017

Volunteer opportunities are available to help with the 28th Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival 2017 being held at Susan Campbell Park at the Annapolis City Dock. The annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, coordinated by Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc., raises an awareness of the African-American heritage and the common challenges encountered by all ethnic groups striving to preserve their culture.  The festival will be held at the Annapolis City Dock, Sat., Sept. 23, 2017 from 10:00a.m– 7:00 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available for: set up, refreshments, clean up, children’s activities, and much more.  For more information contact[email protected], or visit www.kuntakinte.orgwhere you may sign up for your desired volunteer opportunity.

Langton Green, Inc.

LGI helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities live with the highest possible degree of independence and quality of life by providing homes, support, and services. We welcome volunteers who are passionate about working with our people who happen to have intellectual and developmental disabilities. We have a variety of needs so we can accommodate individual interests, as well as groups. LGI has a community farm at 844 Veteran’s Highway, Millersville, MD. MD Office of Tourism Development Welcome Center Program

Volunteer at one of Maryland’s Welcome Centers by joining the award winning Ambassador program.  The volunteer staff welcomes visitors and local residents coming to the Welcome Centers for Maryland information. They also offer assistance with directions and transportation options, hotel accommodations, assist visitors with itineraries, greet motor coaches and work with tourism industry and private sector representatives within Maryland. Each volunteer works at least one 4-hour shift every week at the Welcome Center desk: Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Monday. All Centers are closed on all State holidays.  The Maryland Welcome Centers are located in Howard County on I-95.  Training is provided and volunteer activities are planned throughout the year. Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland

Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland needs volunteers to provide help with a number of core programs and support systems for its home-delivered meal clients that can prevent premature institutionalization and increase quality of life. Such assistance includes delivery of meals to the homebound, grocery shopping and delivery, and delivery of freezer friendly meals to cancer patients. Support services include help with connecting clients who are isolated with outside services or organizations or providing in-house services such volunteer companions, phone pals, delivery of pet food, and other support to enable clients to stay in their homes. Training, including weekly orientations for new volunteers, is provided and schedules are flexible. YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County

The YWCA of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County focuses on providing crisis intervention services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. This is accomplished through the domestic violence safe house shelter, a 24-hour crisis phone line, counseling services, an Abuser Intervention Program, hospital accompaniment for victims of sexual assault, legal representation of victims who are obtaining peace and protective orders, and after school tutoring and mentoring programs.
