Baysox, RubberDucks split pair

Baysox FieldThe Bowie Baysox (55-50) and the Akron RubberDucks (51-52) split a pair of games on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie. In a resumption of Thursday’s suspended game, Bowie tied an Eastern League season-high with 21 runs in a 21-1 win, while Akron notched a 4-2 victory in the nightcap.

The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. with LHP John Means (7-7, 4.24) on the mound for the Baysox in game one against Akron RHP Matt Esparza (5-2, 3.84). RHP Jesus Liranzo (1-3, 4.67) gets the start for Bowie in game two against Akron RHP Shane Bieber (0-0, 0.00).

Game One

In the resumption of a suspended game from Thursday night, the Bowie Baysox tied an Eastern League season-high with 21 runs in a 21-1 win over the Akron RubberDucks.

Akron is the other Eastern League club to score 21 runs in a game this season.

The Baysox broke the game open with an eight-run second highlighted by two-run doubles from Ryan Flaherty and Anthony Santander to make it a 9-0 game.

Austin Hays’ solo shot in the home half of the first put Bowie on the board. The home run was Hays’ ninth of the year with the Baysox.

Akron starter Matt Whitehouse (6-5) gave up the nine runs (four earned) on six hits to go along with four walks in 1.2 IP.

A three-run fifth extended the Bowie lead to 12-0 as Cedric Mullins provided the big blow in the frame with a two-run blast off of RHP Jordan Milbrath (3.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, 3 K) and Erick Salcedoplated a run via an RBI double. The home run was Mullins’ ninth of the season.

Five more runs would come home for Bowie in the sixth as Ryan Mountcastle delivered a pair with a two-run double, DJ Stewart knocked home a run with an RBI double and Salcedo came through with a sac fly to stretch the lead to 17-0.

Austin Wynns plated a pair with a two-run single and Salcedo delivered a run with an RBI triple as part of a four-run eighth to give the Baysox a 21-0 lead.

RHP Jordan Kipper (3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the win for Bowie with 3.2 shutout IP of relief.

Bobby Bradley’s solo shot in the top of the ninth got Akron on the board.

Baysox starter Tanner Scott (n/d) did not allow a hit while walking and fanning a pair in 3.1 IP.

Six different Baysox had multi-hit games: Hays (2-3, HR, RBI, 3 R), Mountcastle (2-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI, R), Rosa (2-4, RBI, 2 R), Salcedo (2-4, 2B, 3B, 4 RBI, 3 R), Santander (2-2, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 5 R) and Stewart (2-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R).

The five runs scored for Santander tie a franchise record and the first time it has been done since Sebastian Boucher and Carlos Rojas each scored five on August 1, 2008 vs. Altoona.

Game Two

The Bowie Baysox managed just five hits in a 4-2 loss to the Akron RubberDucks in game two on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Akron starter Thomas Pannone (6-1) surrendered the two runs on four hits to go along with seven strikeouts over 6.1 IP. RHP Cameron Hill (0.2 IP, H, 2 K) got the final two outs to notch his eighth save.

The RubberDucks put a pair of men on with back-to-back singles in the third before Joe Sever cleared the bases with a two-out, two-run double to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

A two-run sixth extended the Akron lead to 4-0 as Yu Chang knocked home a run via an RBI double and Eric Haase delivered a run with a sac fly.

Baysox starter David Hess (8-7) gave up the four runs on six hits while walking three and fanning three in 5.1 IP.

DJ Stewart’s two-run shot off of Pannone in the seventh brought the Baysox within a pair at 4-2. The home run was Stewart’s 13th of the season. Six of Stewart’s 13 home runs have come against the RubberDucks.

RHP Ryan Meisinger (1.2 IP, 3 K) had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Gary Kendall’s squad, while Audry Perez (2-3) had a mult-hit game.
