Baysox hold on to sweep Yard Goats

Baysox FieldLHP John Means did not allow an earned run over six strong innings of relief and the Bowie Baysox (45-41) completed the three-game sweep with a 3-2 victory over the Hartford Yard Goats (36-48) on Thursday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

Means (6-7) gave up two runs (none earned) on four hits while tying his season-high with eight strikeouts over six innings of work.

Trailing 3-2, Hartford had runners a first and second with one out in the eighth, but LHP Garrett Cleavinger got a groundout and Austin Hays robbed Brian Mundell with a sliding catch in center to end the inning.

Cleavinger (2.0 IP, 2 H, K) got the final six outs to notch his third save of the year.

Bowie has won nine straight at home for the first time since August 14-28, 2012.

The Baysox have also matched their season-high at four games above .500

In the home half of the first, singles from Adrian Marin and Hays put two men on before Garabez Rosa’s three-run shot cleared the bases to give the Baysox a 3-0 lead.

The home run was Rosa’s 10th of the season and he now has more RBI (63) this season than he had in all of 2016 (62).

Hartford’s Josh Fuentes reached on a dropped popup to start the third and scored on Brendan Rodgers’two-run shot off of Means to bring the visitors within a run at 3-2.

Yard Goats starter Jack Wynkoop (5-8) surrendered three runs on six hits to go along with a walk and seven strikeouts in 7.0 IP.

Baysox starter Tanner Scott (n/d) gave up one hit while fanning one in his one inning of work.

Hays (2-4, R) and Marin (2-4, R) both had a multi-hit game for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

The Baysox open a three-game set with the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Friday night at Prince George’s Stadium and first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. RHP David Hess (8-5, 4.41) will get the start for Bowie against Richmond RHP Sam Coonrod (3-7, 4.42).
