Austin Hays homers twice for Bowie in series finale

Baysox FieldRHP Lucas Long did not allow an earned run over seven innings of work and the Bowie Baysox (50-43) took the series from the Altoona Curve (47-44) with a 9-1 win in the finale on Sunday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona.

Long (6-3) gave up one run (none earned) on six hits while fanning three in his 7.0 IP. RHP Scott McGough (1.0 IP) and RHP Jason Garcia (1.0 IP, 3 BB, K) combined to close things out for Bowie.

The Baysox grabbed an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first as a single and walk put two men on before Garabez Rosa and DJ Stewart came through with back-to-back RBI singles.

Kevin Newman reached on an error to start the bottom half of the frame, stole second, advanced to third on a single and scored on Logan Hill’s sac fly to bring the Curve within 2-1.

Bowie’s Mike Yastrzemski led off the third inning with a double down the right field line and scored on Rosa’s second RBI single of the night to stretch the lead to 3-1.

The 3-1 score would hold until the seventh when Yastrzemski got on base with a single and Austin Hays cleared the bases with a two-run shot off of Altoona starter Tanner Anderson.

Anderson (7-8) allowed the five runs on eight hits to go along with three walks and eight strikeouts in 6.2 IP.

A four-run eighth broke the game open for the Baysox and made it a 9-1 game as a walk and single started the inning before Yastrzemski knocked home both with a two-run triple and Hays hit his second home run of the day. The home run was Hays’ sixth of the year with Bowie.

Four different Baysox had multi-hit games: Hays (2-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 3 R), Rosa (2-5, 2 RBI), Stewart (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Yastrzemski (4-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI, 4 R).

This marks the first four-hit game for Yastrzemski since August 29, 2015 at Reading. The four runs scored are also a career-high.

The Baysox head to Hartford to open a three-game set with the Yard Goats on Monday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. First pitch of the series opener is set for 7:05 p.m. with LHP Tanner Scott (0-1, 1.84) will be on the mound for Bowie against Hartford RHP Yency Almonte (4-3, 1.98).
