The Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works (DPW) Watershed Protection and Restoration Program (WPRP) was recently awarded more than $1.68 million in grants from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) Chesapeake & Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund (Trust Fund) for the construction of a stream and wetland restoration project in Severn Run Natural Environment Area.

The Najoles Road Stream Restoration capital project, located adjacent to the Post Office off Najoles Road in Millersville, was identified due to the highly degraded condition of the stream and has been a major concern of the Severn River Commission for years.  The work will restore an unnamed tributary leading to Severn Run that has been severely eroded by uncontrolled stormwater discharges from the large amount of impervious surfaces, such as roads, parking lots, rooftops, and other hard surfaces in the area.  Stormwater exiting an outdated stormwater management pond at the post office is actively contributing to sediment to Severn Run and has created canyon-like stream banks approaching 20 feet in height in some places.

“We are excited to partner with Maryland DNR to restore and protect this incredibly valuable community asset. The restored streams and wetlands of the Severn Run Natural Environment Area will be enjoyed by many generations to come,” said DPW Director Chris Phipps.

While design plans are still in development, the project is expected to include completion of 1,800 linear feet of stream and wetland restoration and retrofitting the existing Maryland State Highway Administration stormwater management pond near the Millersville Post Office.

The Watershed Protection and Restoration Program (WPRP), part of the Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, is responsible for carrying out the County’s stormwater restoration strategies to improve local water quality and ensure it meets both federal and state water quality requirements.
