Baysox stun Curve with five-run 8th inning

A five-run eighth inning propelled the Bowie Baysox (39-39) to a come-from-behind victory with a 6-3 win over the Altoona Curve (40-35) on Wednesday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

In the afore-mentioned five-run eighth, a walk, single and a throwing error on a sac bunt loaded the bases with nobody out before Austin Hays came through with an RBI single to plate a run, Garabez Rosa reached on an RBI fielder’s choice to tie the game and DJ Stewart came through with the go-ahead two-out RBI single to left to give the Baysox the lead. Mike Yastrzemski’s two-run single later in the frame stretched the Bowie lead to 6-3.

RHP Tate Scioneaux (0.2 IP, 3 H, 5 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 K) was tagged with the loss for Altoona and falls to 5-3 on the season.

RHP Jason Garcia (2.0 IP, H, K) earned the win for the Baysox with two shutout innings of relief to improve to 4-2. RHP Jefri Hernandez (1.0 IP, H, K) tossed a scoreless ninth to notch his second save of the year.

Kevin Newman’s leadoff solo shot in the top of the first gave Altoona an early 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Wyatt Mathisen extended the lead for the Curve to 2-0 with a solo shot off of Baysox starter Matthew Grimes.

Altoona made it a 3-0 game in the fifth when Pablo Reyes led off with a single, stole second, took third on a groundout and scored on Jordan Luplow’s RBI infield single.

Grimes (n/d) gave up the three runs on five hits while walking two and fanning three in six innings of work. The quality start for Grimes marked the fifth in his last six starts.

The Baysox got on the board with a run in the fifth as Stewart (2-4, RBI, 2 R) led off with a single, advanced to second on a single from Aderlin Rodriguez, took third on a flyout and scored on Erick Salcedo’s RBI single.

Curve starter Austin Coley (n/d) gave up one run on four hits to go along with four strikeouts in 7.0 IP.

The series wraps up on Thursday at 11:05 a.m. as RHP Jesus Liranzo (1-3, 5.40) will make the start for Bowie against Altoona RHP Tanner Anderson (6-6, 3.79).
