Baysox had their chances, but fall short

Baysox FieldThe Bowie Baysox (29-27) had a runner on in eight of nine innings, but fell 2-0 to the Altoona Curve (30-23) on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

The Baysox left seven men on base in the game.

Curve starter Alex McRae (4-1) scattered seven hits while walking two and fanning three over seven shutout innings. RHP Tate Scioneaux (2.0 IP, H, 2 K) got the final six outs to notch his fourth save of the year.

Tomas Morales’ solo shot in the top of the third off of Baysox starter Matthew Grimes gave Altoona a 1-0 lead.

The Baysox had runners at first and second with nobody out in the fifth, but were unable to push a run across against McRae.

In the top of the seventh, Jordan Luplow’s solo blast off of Grimes made it a 2-0 game in favor of the visitors.

Grimes (2-5) allowed two runs on six hits to go along with three walks and six strikeouts in eight innings of work. The 8.0 IP tied a career-high for Grimes after he also went eight on May 29, 2016 with Frederick (A+).

RHP Jason Garcia (1.0 IP, H, K) had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

Stevie Wilkerson (2-4) collected his third straight multi-hit game for the Baysox.

The series wraps up on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. with RHP Brandon Barker (3-1, 3.61) on the mound for Bowie against Altoona LHP Brandon Waddell (0-2, 3.33).
