4 run first inning costs Baysox in 8-3 loss

ABaysox Field four-run first proved costly as the Bowie Baysox (28-25) dropped an 8-3 decision to the Erie SeaWolves (22-27) on Wednesday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

In the afore-mentioned four-run first, Dominic Ficociello and Mike Gerber both provided RBI doubles in the frame, while Gabriel Quintana delivered an RBI single to open up an early 4-0 lead for Erie.

The SeaWolves tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth courtesy of a sac fly and a throwing error charged to Baysox RF Garabez Rosa to extend the lead to 6-0.

Baysox starter John Means (2-6) allowed the six runs (five earned) on eight hits to go along with a walk and three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Ross Kivett’s RBI single in the sixth opened up a 7-0 advantage for the visitors. The run was charged to RHPJason Garcia (2.0 IP, 4 H, R, ER).

In the home half of the frame, a walk and a single put two men on before both runners scored on Austin Wynns’two-run double to put Bowie on the board and cut the lead to 7-2.

Erie starter Artie Lewicki (3-2) surrendered two runs on three hits while walking one and fanning seven in 5.2 IP.

Back-to-back doubles from Sean Coyle and Jay Gonzalez in the seventh brought the Baysox within 7-3.

The SeaWolves extended the lead to 8-3 on Ficociello’s sac fly in the ninth.

Rosa extended his hitting streak to nine games with a single in the sixth.

The series wraps up on Thursday at 6:35 p.m. as RHP David Hess (6-3, 4.76) will head to the hill for the Baysox against SeaWolves LHP Matt Crouse (4-1, 5.14)
