7 run 2nd inning lifts Baysox to 8-5 win

Baysox FieldA seven-run second inning lifted the Bowie Baysox (11-10) to an 8-5 win over the Akron RubberDucks (9-12) on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie.

In the afore-mentioned seven-run second, OF DJ Stewart provided the big blow with a bases clearing triple, Garabez Rosa plated a pair with a two-run double and Sean Coyle and Tucker Nathans both delivered RBI singles in the frame.

The seven runs in the second marked the most scored in an inning by the Baysox since plating nine on June 5, 2016 at Akron.

RHP Lucas Long (4.0 IP, 2 H, 2 K) earned the win for the Baysox with four shutout innings of relief to improve to 3-1 on the year, which ties him for the Eastern League lead in wins. RHP Ryan Meisinger (1.0 IP, H, R, ER, BB) tossed the ninth for manager Gary Kendall’s squad.

Greg Allen’s leadoff home run in the top of the first off of Baysox starter Brandon Barker gave the RubberDucks an early 1-0 lead.

In the home half of the frame, Stewart tied things at one apiece with a leadoff blast of his own for Bowie. The home run was Stewart’s fourth of the season and marked the third time this season that the Baysox have hit a leadoff home run. It was also Stewart’s first RBI of the year at Prince George’s Stadium.

The last time that both teams hit a leadoff home run in the same Baysox game was on July 4, 2016 at Trenton.

Akron’s Eric Stamets drew a two-out walk in the top of the second, stole second and scored on Todd Hankins’RBI single to give the visitors a 2-1 edge for the time being.

Stewart tied his career-high with four RBIs, the third time in his career that he has driven in four runs.

All eight runs were charged to RubberDucks starter D.J. Brown (0-1) who allowed the eight runs on seven hits while walking three in 1.2 IP.

A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for Akron in the fourth before Allen knocked home a pair with a two-run single to cut the lead to 8-4.

Barker (n/d) surrendered four runs on six hits to go along with two walks and four strikeouts in four innings of work.

Rosa (3-4, 2B, 2 RBI, R) and Stewart (2-5, 3B, HR, 4 RBI, 2 R) each had a multi-hit game for the Baysox.

Allen plated his fourth run of the night for Akron with a sac fly in the ninth to cut the lead to 8-5.

The series wraps up on Sunday at 2:05 p.m. as LHP John Means (1-0, 1.31) will toe the rubber for Bowie against Akron RHP Julian Merryweather (1-1, 3.48).
