AFS-USA

Helping to bring the people of the world together is exciting, interesting, and rewarding work. For more than 60 years AFS (formerly American Field Service) Volunteers have been building bridges of intercultural understanding and changing the way the world works through a variety of volunteer opportunities. AFS-USA is looking for volunteers on an ongoing basis to engage in local activities for exchange students from all over the world. Volunteers participate in many ways from helping at student orientation events, planning weekend activities, promoting AFS study abroad programs to local schools and even becoming host families for our students. Annapolis Police Department Auxiliary Unit

The Auxiliary consists of uniformed civilian volunteers providing assistance to the Police Department under the direction of the Support Services Division. Its mission is to assist the agency through volunteer police service with assignments as designated. The Auxiliary serves as additional “eyes and ears” for the department, connecting with the community, in the performance of duties. It assists career police officers by providing supplemental services such as patrol, traffic direction, and fingerprinting to the residence of Annapolis through volunteer service. Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

Change a life through literacy by becoming a Literacy Tutor! Tutor Training sessions are being offered from 9:00 AM–4:00 PM, Sat., Feb. 25 AND Sat., Mar. 4, 2017 at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park and will include both Basic Literacy and English Language Learner instruction. We have a class size limit of 35. Enrollees MUST preregister and attend both sessions. Crayon Initiative

The Crayon Initiative needs you to donate your unwanted crayons and they will recycle them into new ones. Then they will donate them back to schools, hospitals, arts programs and other organizations invested in our children. Suzy Provine and the Glen Burnie Civitan Club are starting this initiative in Anne Arundel County. Let her know if you are interested in a drop box. The Glen Burnie Civitans are volunteers who help families, children and individuals with developmental disabilities in and around Anne Arundel County, MD. Anne Arundel County Public Schools AVID Tutoring Program

Tutors are being sought for the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID program.  A 3-hour training session is being held from 9:00 a.m–12:00 p.m., Tues., Tues., Feb. 7, 2017 at the Carver Center in Gambrills. For more information contact: Dot Arida at 410-222-5458 or [email protected] and visit website: http://www.aacps.org/avid/.  The AVID Tutoring Program supports students in grades 6 through 12 who are in the academic middle. AVID tutors, age 18 and older, will be trained to work with small groups of students during the AVID elective class.  These students have gone through an application process and have been selected to participate in the AVID Program at their respective school. Tutors will help students be successful by assisting them with problem-solving techniques, working collaboratively with other students, and serving as role models. Tutors would commit to at least one semester of tutoring at one of the AVID sites for a minimum of one hour per week, during the regular school day. Bay Community Support Services (BAY-CSS)

Bay-CSS is a leader of services to people with disabilities throughout Southern and Central Maryland.  Their services promote the ability of people with varying abilities, ages, and life situations to live and work successfully in their communities. They are offering the following volunteer opportunities:

1.      Bay-CSS is looking for friendly and caring volunteers to assist with maintenance and upkeep (weeding, raking, tree trimming, painting, and minor repairs) at our residential group homes in Anne Arundel County.

2.      We are also in need of assistance with maintaining our agency’s vehicles (washing and detailing).  This is a great opportunity for a volunteer group.

3.      In addition we are looking for individuals to serve on our Safety Committee. Committee Members will be asked to provide feedback on current dealings involving the health and safety of the Agency, to help brainstorm new policies and procedures or ideas on how to improve in the areas of health and safety, and may also be asked to do person to person interviews with our individuals.

Maryland Department of Juvenile Services

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services is looking for volunteers, age 21 and older, to serve as tutors, and provide mentoring. Background checks are required and training will be provided. Severna Park High School – Financial Literacy

The Severna Park High School’s Business Advisory Board is looking for volunteers to help present financial literacy lessons to students in grades 10-12 from 8:00am-9:15am, Friday March 24, 2017. The financial literacy lessons focus on the topics of “What is a millionaire?” for 10th graders, “Saving/Budgeting” for 11th graders, and “Credit Card Basics” for 12th graders.  The presentations (including talking points and classroom discussion questions) have already been prepared and will be available a few weeks in advance, but volunteers are encouraged to augment them with anecdotes that enhance the lesson.  For the financially savvy, this is a fun way to share your knowledge and experience.  To obtain a sign-up link or for more information, contact Joanne Brack, Signature Program Facilitator, at [email protected] or 410-544-0900.

 

Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults

There are a variety of volunteer positions open throughout the week leading up to, and the weekend of, this year’s Blue Jeans (& Bowties) Ball being held from 7:00–11:30 p.m. on Sat. Whether you enjoy decorating, greeting guests, assisting with Silent Auction or just want to help out wherever you can, we have something for everyone on January 25-29, 2017.  .
