AARP Anne Arundel County 2016 Tax Return Preparation

AARP will provide free tax preparation for seniors and low income clients at 10 sites in AA County from Jan.–Apr. 2016. Volunteer tax counselors are needed to help prepare tax returns on computers at each of the sites. In addition, volunteer appointment takers and greeters are needed to schedule client appointments and assist clients at such sites. Tax training for volunteer preparers and client facilitators will be held on several dates from January 9-25, 2017; AARP membership is not required. Days End Farm Horse Rescue 

Days End Farm Horse Rescue, Inc., is a 501(c)(3), volunteer-based, animal welfare organization established in 1989 to ensure quality care and treatment of horses through intervention, education and outreach. Farm volunteers are needed to assist in feeding, grooming & caring for the horses, mucking stalls & paddocks and doing general barn chores and clean-up. Additional opportunities include: farm maintenance, administrative/clerical, fundraising, grant writing, special events, IT and education. Heartland Hospice Services

Heartland Hospice provides hospice care to patients with limited life expectancy as well as support to their caregivers. Volunteers, age 18 and up with a driver’s license, are needed as Friendly Visitors to visit patients in their home or nursing home, as Vigil Volunteers to sit with patients without immediate family who are nearing death, as Bereavement Volunteers to call on families of those recently deceased. Clerical and Special Project Volunteers are also needed to help with mailings, office projects, and to create special gifts for patients. Hospice of the Chesapeake

Volunteers with four-wheel drive vehicles are needed to assist Hospice of the Chesapeake patients and staff in Anne Arundel and Prince George’s Counties during inclement weather conditions. Lakou Association

Lakou Association is a nonprofit agency founded in 2003 in the United States, headquartered in Washington, D.C. with offices in Haiti, committed to deepen public understanding about issues faced by Haitians; we work at enabling initiatives to improve the quality of life of Haitians in Haiti and those living overseas (the Diaspora).

Hurricane Matthew the most brutal Caribbean storm in decades has created havoc in the Caribbean, killing thousands and today nearly 900,000 children are menaced by its catastrophe and its dangerous aftermath. Over 176,000 people are now living in shelters with their homes either damaged or destroyed. As the holidays are approaching we would like help many of these families transition from a shelter to a temporary or permanent home while continuing to provide medical help to these victims. We are conducting a major fundraising drive for the Hurricane Matthew victims and are looking for a group of volunteers to help us in our efforts. Lutheran Mission Society

Mission statement: “Bringing health and wholeness to people through the love and compassion of Jesus Christ.” Programs provide walk-in clients with groceries, clothing, some health services, Christian counseling and spiritual support. We welcome volunteers (age 15 and up) to help with sorting, storing, and packing donated food and other goods at the Annapolis Compassion Center, 230 West Street, Annapolis, MD 21401. Mane Event at Andover Equestrian Center

Mane Event is a non-profit corporation that gives lessons in horsemanship and horseback riding to children and adults with a wide range of emotional, cognitive and physical disabilities. These therapeutic riding lessons are conducted under the supervision of a PATH International certified instructor. In addition to therapeutic riding, The Center also offers hippotherapy, equine facilitated therapy for riders with specific and prescribed therapy goals. Hippotherapy sessions are led by a licensed physical, occupational or speech therapist. Volunteers are used in certain capacities in both therapeutic riding and hippotherapy to provide assistance to the rider/client and to manage/control the horse. Volunteers are also needed to care for the horses, assist with barn chores, special events and fund-raising. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, January 16, 2017

On Monday January 16, 2017, the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Center and the Church on the Rock are co-hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The event will take place at Church on the Rock, 649 Old Mill Road, Millersville, MD from 10am until 2pm. A large number of volunteers are needed to help with a number of craft projects and may register for one of two shifts from 10:00am-11:30am or 12:30 pm-2pm. For more information and to express interest, go to www.aacvc.org/OpportunityCalendar. Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts

Maryland Hall is holding orientation sessions from 6:00 – 7:30pm Thurs., Jan. 17, OR 6:00 – 7:30pm, Tues., Jan. 19, 2017, (attend only one session) in Room 205 for prospective volunteers who will usher at Maryland Hall performances or assist at special events. Ushering requires some standing and walking, excellent customer service, and attendance at an additional training session soon after the orientation training. Special events volunteers will help a variety of tasks including set up prior to and close up at the end of the fall Arts Alive Gala and spring Art Auction.
