Busy December at Chesapeake Arts Center

Chesapeake Arts Center logoThis holiday season, the Chesapeake Arts Center is continuing its tradition of offering a variety of fun, holiday performances and activities for the whole family. Now in its 14th season, Spencer Humm Entertainment Presents The Baltimore Special’s Christmas Radio Comedy show on December 9, 10, 11, 16, 17 and 18, 2016. Saturday shows starting at 8:00pm and Sunday shows starting at 3:00pm in the Studio 194 Theatre located at 194 Hammonds Lane Brooklyn Park, Maryland. Tickets $35-55. As always wear your pajamas! The CAC will be hosting two holiday workshops. On Saturday, December 3, children ages 6-11 can enjoy the “Young At Art” one day workshop with instructor Alexis Smith from 10:30am-11:30am. Register ahead or just drop in for the morning of creative art for kids. The theme for December is “Winter Holidays”. Tuition Fee $15.00.

Or, on Saturday, December 10 bring the whole family for the Nature Ornament Workshop with Echoes of Nature from 1:00pm-2:30pm. A hands-on workshop that’s great for the whole family! Each individual is invited to create a unique holiday ornament out of materials found in our natural environment. Class includes a “guest appearance” by some friendly animal ambassadors! CAC Member $25 for the whole family or $30 for non-members.

Catalyst: The Art of John Gornto gallery exhibit runs from December 9th to the 17th in the Hal Gomer Gallery. An opening reception will be held Friday, December 9th from 6 PM to 8 PM featuring the Pandemic Steelband, and is free to the public. Catalyst: The Art of John Gornto is presented by the Museum Practice students of UMBC Visuals Arts Department and hosted by Chesapeake Arts Center.

In science, a catalyst incites reaction. John Gornto, artist and aerospace engineer, works in the Baltimore area. He creates artworks that react to his personal struggles and to his environment. Over 15 artworks, both large and small scale, including acrylic and watercolor paintings and sculptures within cigar boxes will be featured.

Join us on Saturday, December 10, 2016 at 6:30pm in the Hammonds Lane Theatre with the Annapolis Junction Big Band. They will be performing this year’s family-friendly show that promises to delight all ages. Following the concert, we invite everyone to attend the CAC annual Tree Lighting event in front of the Hammonds Lane Theatre and enjoy complimentary coffee and hot chocolate from Dunkin Donuts Cruiser.

Also on Tuesday, December 13th, the CAC will be hosting its monthly In the Studio talk with guest speaker, actor and singer, Maia Rodriguez at 6:00pm in Studio 194 Theatre. This event is free to the community. Maia Rodriguez, a graduate of Syracuse University’s Musical Theater program, she’s worked for Syracuse Stage, Universal Studios, Tokyo Disney Sea, Don’t Tell Mama’s Cabaret NYC, Cirque Du Soleil, Pirates Dinner Adventure in LA & Orlando, and the Star Theatre in Oceanside, CA. She’s sung National Anthems for the Cleveland Browns, the San Diego Padres and the San Diego Chargers, as well as Superbowl XLVIII under Renee Fleming & 50 with Lady Gaga. Maia is the composer of two full length musicals: The Hack & Slash Christmas Special & Evernight: the Musical. Her new production company is “Little Fox Productions” (www.littlefoxpro.com), taking fantastical stories and setting them to music. She sings with the United States Navy Band Sea Chanters as an alto vocalist, performing every year for the PBS Memorial Show hosted by Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna.
