Authorities, good samaritans rescue 22 sailors tossed overboard

At 2:20 pm The Annapolis City Fire Department was alerted to an open water drowning in the Annapolis Harbor.  While in route, emergency personnel received information that several sailboats from the Severn Sailing Association had overturned with individuals scattered throughout the Severn River.

As units arrived in the area, they found multiple single person vessels had overturned.

Of the twenty-two (22) vessels in the water, half of the operators were rescued by good Samaritans, representatives of local sailing groups or emergency personnel.

There was a significant change in weather which necessitated abandoning several vessels; but were marked by rescue crews for later recovery.

As of 4:45 pm all were accounted for.  There were no injuries reported by those being rescued or emergency personnel. The Anne Arundel County, United States Naval Academy Fire Departments, The United States Coast Guard, Maryland State Police Aviation, and The Department of Natural of Resources assisted in the rescue and recovery of the sailors and vessels.
