5-hour Glen Burnie barricade ends with suicide attempt

police lineOn December 6, 2016 at approximately 1:15 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Old Stage Road in Glen Burnie for a domestic assault. Upon arrival officers met with an adult female victim who stated that she had been assaulted by a male inside her apartment. She identified the male as 38 year old Mario Alexander Taylor from Glen Burnie.

Officers attempted to make contact with Taylor, however he refused to answer the door and stated he was armed with a gun. Officers were able to see Taylor through an apartment window and observed he was armed with a rifle so they immediately took cover. At that time, Taylor began barricading the front and refused all commands to come outside.

Officers called for assistance, and our Quick Response Team (QRT) along with trained negotiators responded to the scene. QRT officers set up a perimeter around the apartment as negotiators made contact with Taylor. Taylor made several threats towards officers and was also making several suicidal statements. After several hours of negotiations, at 6:18 pm, officers heard what they believed to be a single gunshot come from inside the apartment. At 6:21 pm, QRT officers made forced entry into the apartment and located Taylor suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.

Taylor, who was alert and conscious, was transported to Maryland Shock Trauma where he is listed in critical but stable condition. Officers recovered a .22 caliber rifle from the apartment that is believed to be the weapon that Taylor used to shoot himself.
