Paddling With A Purpose: Annapolis Dragon Boat Club

adbc-in-action-photosLeading the charge for October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Annapolis Dragon Boat Club’s “Paddling with a Purpose!” celebration and fundraiser will take place on Sunday, October 2nd, from 2p.m. to 6 p.m., at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel, 80 Compromise Street, Annapolis, MD. Funds raised will further the club’s mission of aiding in the recovery of breast cancer and other cancers, as envisioned by its founder, Mike Ashford, former owner of McGarvey’s Saloon & Oyster Bar, 8 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401.

Jamie Costello, news anchor with ABC2 Baltimore, is the event’s honorary chairperson. He recently paddled with the club and did a report in July for the 11 o’clock news: https://youtu.be/iTRVHKNasw4 (2:42) The celebration includes food, music, drinks, live and silent auctions, a “Wine Pull,” and a 50/50 raffle. Items at the silent auction include a one week stay in Vail, CO, golf certificates, artwork, gift certificates from area restaurants, salons and stores, a one-week stay for two ($3600 value) at the world renown Movara Health & Fitness Resort in Ivins, Utah, a two-night stay in New York City, tickets to area athletic events, and gift baskets with a variety of themes (health, beauty, wine, food, etc.). Attendees will also be able to enjoy views of Annapolis Harbor and Ego Alley from the hotel’s upper deck and ballroom.

The Annapolis Dragon Boat Club’s mission is “…to promote the development of healthy bodies and spirits for men and women, to support recovery from breast cancer and all other cancers, and to grow friendships and teamwork.” With a dedicated “Breast Cancer Survivor Team,” they support recovery through the ancient sport of dragon boating, where crews of 20 paddlers take out the club’s two 40-foot boats two or more times a week on Spa Creek. The club also races in Dragon Boat Festivals throughout the year. The exercise involved in paddling the boats has been proven to speed recovery from breast cancer treatment, while the camaraderie of the club gives social support to cancer survivors as well. More than 90 men and women—both cancer “warriors” and supporters—are members of this growing club. New members are always welcome.

Tickets are $40 per person and are available on their website www.annapolisdragonboatclub.org, at McGarvey’s, from ADBC members or the club’s vice chairwoman, Louise Kirk ([email protected]). For more information, or to donate items for the silent auction, please contact Maureen Rice ([email protected]).
