Means deals, Baysox split series with Richmond

baysoxComing into today’s afternoon game the Baysox held just a half game lead in the standing over Richmond. Riding the arm of Baysox starter John Means, who recorded a season-high six strikeouts and was able to settle down after a rough first inning, the Baysox were able to win today’s contest 6-4 and garner the series split. 

In the first inning, with one out, Christian Arroyo hit a single to center field and Hunter Cole followed with a two-out walk. Chris Shaw then doubled to center field to bring both runners home and give Richmond a 2-0 lead. 

To lead off the fourth inning for the Flying Squirrels, Shaw hit a home run to right field to give Richmond a 3-0 lead.

The Baysox started manufacturing runs in the bottom half of the fourth frame.  Joey Terdoslavich drew a lead-off walk against Richmond starter Kyle Crick and moved to third base when Garabez Rosa reached on a fielding error by Richmond shortstop Arroyo. Jay Gonzalez walked to load the bases and Chris O’Brien brought one run home with a sacrifice fly. Rosa then scored on an Adrian Marin single to center field and error by Darren Ford. With runners on second and third after a double steal, Drew Dosch finished the inning with a two-out single to center field that scored two more runs to give Bowie a 4-3 lead. Richmond reliever Carlos Alvarado replaced Crick on the mound to record the final out of the inning.

With one out, in the bottom of the sixth inning, O’Brien hit a solo home run to right-center field to give the Baysox a 5-3 lead. 

The Baysox were not satisfied and were intent on adding another insurance run. Chance Sisco hit a one-out double to left field off Richmond reliever Rodolfo Martinez and moved to third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Terdoslavich doubled to center field to plate Sisco and make the score 6-3.

In the top of the ninth inning, with one out, Ryder Jones hit a one-out solo home run to right field off Baysox reliever Donnie Hart to make the final score 6-4.

Means threw five innings and allowed three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out a season-high six batters in the win. Reliever Jesus Liranzo threw two perfect innings, striking out three batters behind Means. Reliever Parker Bridwell threw a scoreless eighth inning, allowing two hits and walking one batter. Hart picked up his fourth save of the season as he allowed one run on one hit in the ninth inning.

Crick took the loss for Richmond, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing four unearned runs on five hits while walking five batters and striking out two.

The Baysox are home through Thursday, Aug. 11 for a three game home series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. After an off-day Monday, the Baysox are back at it Tuesday for Dollar Dog Night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Brandon Barker (5-5, 4.90) gets the start for the Baysox are he will be opposed by LHP Shane Dawson (7-4, 3.91).
