City of Annapolis Emergency Preparedness Exercise, August 25, 2016

The City of Annapolis Office of Emergency Management is conducting its 7th annual City Wide Emergency Preparedness Exercise on August 25, 2016 from 9am-2pm at the Pip Moyer Recreation Center, located at 273 Hilltop Lane in Annapolis.  They need 100 volunteers to act as disaster victims in a shelter.  If you are under age 18, you must come with a legal guardian.  Don’t worry about lunch.  Grilled burgers and hot dogs with chips will be available to volunteers.  Have fun and help your city with this important planning exercise!  Interested in volunteering?  Contact Lauren Miller at [email protected] or by calling 410-216-9167.

8:30 a.m., Wed., Sept. 14, 2016 Golf Tournament Fundraiser: Volunteers, Sponsors, and Participants are being sought for this fundraiser being held at Queenstown Harbor Golf Course Queenstown, MD 21658. There will be a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m. and registration and breakfast start at 8:30 a.m. There will be great food, awards, raffles, and prizes. Volunteers are needed to help prior to the event and on the day of the event to help manage check in, raffles, and prizes, and more. Questions? Higher Achievement Baltimore

Higher Achievement needs adult volunteer mentors to be caring role models for middle school students in underserved communities in East, South, and Southwest Baltimore communities. Higher Achievement mentors are a diverse group of people from a variety of backgrounds. You do not need to have any prior teaching experience to be a mentor. Mentors choose their subjects and receive significant support from Higher Achievement, including curricula, orientation, and regular training and coaching; they teach a small group of 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th graders in a core academic subject: math, English Language Arts, or elective seminar for one hour, once per week although times vary per center. Homework and Reading Program

Now beginning its ninth year, the Homework and Reading Program at Eastport United Methodist Church offers after-school assistance to elementary and kindergarten children.  Volunteers from the community and the church help students with their homework; provide the opportunity to strengthen their reading, writing, comprehension, math and analytical skills; and engage in other educational activities such as a board game, a puzzle, or drawings.   Participants meet twice a week:  Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. at the church, 926 Bay Ridge Avenue in Annapolis.  Volunteers are not expected to attend all sessions.  They can come as often as their schedules allow.  No special training or credentials are needed.  For more information, contact the church at 410-263-5490 or [email protected].

 

Spa Creek Conservancy

11AM-4PM Sat, Sept. 17, 2016, Spa Creek Clean Water PaddleFEST 2016: Participants and sponsors are being sought for this fundraising event to celebrate and bring awareness to clean up efforts in Spa Creek. Enjoy a day of fun on Spa Creek. Take an on-water guided tour, paddle at your leisure, enjoy food and drink and learn about the challenges to restoring the creek so that it will again be fishable and swimmable. Your participation supports clean-up efforts. All human powered paddlers and vessels are welcome to attend. Bring your own craft or use a stand up paddle board from Capital SUP. Fun activities and prizes for all ages. Kid and dog friendly. Paddle at your own pace or take a guided on-water tour of Spa Creek. Guided tours begin at 11:30am and will be available every hour. 10AM-3PM, Sat., Sept. 24 & 9:30 AM-3PM, Sat., Oct. 1, 2016, Volunteer Planting Days: Volunteers are needed to plant and weed rain gardens at the Hawkins Cove Upland portion of Spa Creek located at the Housing Authority of the City of Annapolis (HACA) on Sept. 24 and at the Spa Cove Apartments and Condos on Oct. 1. All ages are welcome. You’ll need to wear old clothes, shoes and gloves. Bring tools if you have them. Here’s what to expect: Landscape Architects and helpers will set out many, many plants (1,500 super plugs, plus trees/shrubs) in their planting positions Friday afternoon and/or early Saturday morning. Volunteers will gather together on the Sat. mornings for the What, Why, and Where briefing, including “green side up” demo. Teams will organize, each with a knowledgeable planter lead. A watering team will follow around to soak all the gardens. Refreshments, water and snacks will be on hand. Hopefully we get done mid-afternoon and clean up. Start The Adventure In Reading (STAIR)

STAIR is a one-on-one reading program geared to help 2nd graders currently reading below grade level that has worked with Anne Arundel County schools for 11 years. For one hour, two days a week after school, tutors read, practice phonics, and work on fluency and comprehension with their student. Learning occurs in a safe, nurturing environment and a bond is forged between tutor and student. STAIR has seven sites in Annapolis and one site in both Edgewater, MD and Crofton, MD. We are currently looking for one and two day a week tutors as well as substitute tutors for all sites. Sites are open either Tuesday/Thursday or Tuesday/Wednesday. Travis Manion Foundation 9/11 Heroes Run, September 11, 2016

Volunteers are needed to assist with the 9/11 Heroes Run starting at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis at 2:00 P.M., Sun., Sept. 11, 2016. The Run is sponsored by the Travis Manion Foundation and is intended to activate & unite communities to honor the sacrifices of those heroes from September 11th and the wars since, to include veterans, active duty, first responder, and families of the fallen. The 9/11 Heroes Run 5k +1M fun run/walk welcomes runners and walkers of all levels and of all ages, volunteers, friends & family. It is not about fitness level or experience but about activating, uniting, and honoring our heroes. Watershed Stewards Academy (WSA)

WSA is currently accepting applications until Sept. 12, 2016 for the 2016-2017 Class of Master Watershed Stewards; informational sessions are being held 6:30pm, Wed., Aug 31, 2016  at the Odenton Library and 6:30pm Thurs., Sept. 8, 2016 at the  Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center in Millersville about the program and how to be certified as a Master Watershed Steward. Watershed Stewards help their communities reduce pollution and restore their waterways by promoting environmental volunteer opportunities in local communities.
