Garcia solid despite Baysox loss to Akron

Baysox 2016The RubberDucks, who are in the middle of a tight race for an Eastern League playoff spot, came into Bowie and took the first game of this weekend series over the Baysox, 4-1.

The Baysox grabbed the lead early and seemed to be headed toward a sure victory as Baysox starter Jason Garcia was dominating the Akron lineup. However, with a one-hitter intact through five innings, Garcia was replaced on the mound. The Bullpen allowed four runs and five hits over the next four innings.

The Baysox got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Joey Terdoslavich doubled to left field off Akron starter Rob Kaminsky and Quincy Latimore followed with an RBI single to left field to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, for Bowie that was all the offense they could muster on the night.

Eric Stamets led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to left field off Baysox reliever Jeff Beliveau to tie the game 1-1.

In the top of the seventh inning,  Baysox reliever Stefan Crichton issued a lead-off walk to Nellie Rodriguez and Mike Papi followed with a home run to right field to give the RubberDucks a 3-1 lead.

In their final at bat, with two outs, Baysox reliever Tanner Scott hit Stamets with a pitch. Stamets moved to second on a pick-off throwing error by Scott and scored after a stolen base and second throwing error by Scott to give Akron a 4-1 lead.

Baysox starter Jason Garcia threw five shutout innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters in a no decision. Beliveau pitched one inning and allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Crichton threw two innings and allowed two runs on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the loss. Scott pitched the ninth inning and allowed one unearned run on one hit and a hit batter while striking out the side.

Kaminsky threw seven innings and allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk in the win.

The Baysox are home through Sunday, Aug. 21 for a three game home series against the Akron RubberDucks. Saturday is the Baysox second Summer Reading Night with Glow Stick Giveaway plus postgame fireworks. LHP John Means (4-6, 4.95) makes the start for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Nick Pasquale (2-6, 4.47).
