Baysox win Sunday game, earn series victory

Baysox 2016The Baysox topped the Binghamton Mets 6-2 Sunday afternoon for their first series win since July 28-31 at Akron. The Baysox have now strung together three consecutive home wins for the first time since July 17, 21, 22.

Pitching has been a strength for the Baysox during the team’s three wins as today’s Baysox starter Matthew Grimes tossed six innings and allowed just one run in the win. The two previous starters, David Hess and Brandon Barker, had combined to throw 11.1 innings with just one run scored in those wins.

Binghamton broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning against Baysox starter Matthew Grimes. Champ Stuart reached with one out on a bunt single and moved to second base on a groundout. Amed Rosario came through with the two-out RBI on a single to center field to give the B-Mets a 1-0 lead. 

The Baysox came right back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning against Binghamton starter Ricky Knapp. Joey Terdoslavich hit a lead-off double down the right field line and he moved to third base on a Quincy Latimore groundout. Sharlon Schoop then brought Terdoslavich home to tie the game 1-1.

The runs kept coming for the Baysox in the bottom of the sixth inning as the team took its first lead of the game. Drew Dosch hit a lead-off double to right field and Chris Dickerson followed with a walk. Chance Sisco brought both runners home with a double to left field to put the Baysox ahead 3-1. 

The B-Mets rallied for one run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the Baysox lead to 3-2 against reliever Tanner Scott. Phillip Evans hit a lead-off single to center field and Rosario followed with a triple to right field to bring a run home. After recording one out, Scott was replaced on the mound by Scott McGough who was able to get out of the inning without allowing the run at third base to score.

The Baysox added some insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Binghamton reliever Paul Paez. With two outs, Sisco hit a solo home run to left-center field and Garabez Rosa followed with a double. Henry Urrutia then hit the Baysox second home run of the inning to drive home two more runs and give Bowie a 6-2 win. 

Scott threw 1.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits and a strikeout and McGough recorded the final two outs of the eighth inning to protect the Baysox lead. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish out the game for the Baysox.

Knapp took the loss for Binghamton, throwing seven innings and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking two batters. 

The Baysox are home through Thursday, Sep. 1 for the final four game home series of the season against the Harrisburg Senators. Monday is the final Mutt Monday of the season beginning at 7:05 p.m. RHP Jason Garcia (5-9, 4.79) will make the start for the Baysox.
