Haase, Akron offense overwhelm Baysox

Baysox 2016In a game where the RubberDucks did not garner the lead until the eighth inning, Akron scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to surge through the Baysox, 8-5. Three home runs, two by Eric Haase, proved to be too much for the Baysox pitching staff as Bowie is now a season-low 22 games below .500 on the season.

In the home half of the first inning, Chris Dickerson hit a one-out single to left field off Akron starter Nick Pasquale and moved to second base when Chance Sisco reached on a fielder’s choice. Joey Terdoslavich then brought Dickerson home with a single to center field to give the Baysox a 1-0 lead.

Haase led off the second inning with a solo home run to left field off Baysox starter John Means to tie the game 1-1.

In the next half inning Dickerson had an immediate response as he led off the inning with a home run to right field to put the Baysox ahead 2-1.

In the top of the fourth inning, Haase hit a one-out double to left field and moved to third base on a Mike Papi single to center field. Joe Sever brought Haase home with a sacrifice fly to tie the game 2-2.

The Baysox refused to relinquish the lead.  Drew Dosch drew a lead-off walk to start the fourth inning and then moved to second base on a groundout and scored on a two-out Julio Borbon double to left field to give the Baysox a 3-2 advantage.

With one out in the fifth inning Greg Allen was hit-by-a-pitch and Luigi Rodriguez followed with a double to right field to put runners on second and third base. A Jeremy Lucas sacrifice fly then brought Allen home to again tie the score 3-3.

The eighth inning is when the tides really began to shift. Nellie Rodriguez drew a lead-off walk from Baysox reliever Jesus Liranzo and Haase followed with his second home run of the night to give their first lead of the night, 5-3.

However, once again, Bowie would respond. Terdoslavich hit a one-out single to right field off Akron reliever Colt Hynes and went all the way to third base when Garabez Rosa reached on a force attempt and throwing error by Sever at third base. Henry Urrutia brought both runs home with a double to right field to tie the game at 5.

The RubberDucks refused to go away. As the ninth inning rolled around Todd Hankins hit a lead-off single to left field off Baysox reliever Logan Ondrusek and he moved to second base on an Allen sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Lucas brought Hankins home with a double to right field and Rodriguez followed with a home run to left field to extend the Akron lead to 8-5.

Means threw 5.2 innings and allowed three runs on six hits while striking out three and walking four in the no decision. Liranzo threw 2.1 innings and allowed two runs on one hit with two walks and five strikeouts. Ondrusek took the loss, throwing the ninth inning and allowing three runs on four hits while striking out two batters.

Hynes got his first win of the season for Akron after throwing two innings and allowing two runs on three hits.
