Annapolis Rotary 2014 Crab Feast Publicity 11 - 20140607Tickets are on sale now for the 71st annual World’s Largest Crab Feast sponsored by the Rotary Club of Annapolis. The event is open to the public from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, August 5, at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. In the past guests have lined up outside the stadium gates as much as five hours in advance to get their trays of #1 large Maryland steamed blue crabs and get cracking. Rotary encourages guests to purchase their tickets in advance to avoid long lines.

Telephone tickets are on sale until noon August 5 at the $65 price for adults and $25 for children ages 3 to 12. Preferred dining is $130 for adults. Tickets will go on sale at the gate at 4 p.m. for $75 for adults and $25 for children. Visit http://annapolisrotary.showare.com/crabfeast or call 1-877-333-9667 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This special event is a major fund-raiser which benefits local community and cultural non-profit organizations. The Rotary Club of Annapolis will accept applications for grants near the end of the fall for distribution in the winter. The amount distributed in the past has ranged from $45,000 to more than $71,000, depending on the cost of the crabs and other crab feast expenses.

The feast is all-you-can-eat-and-drink, says Sue Weber, Annapolis Rotarian and crab feast chairman. Wooden mallets and other utensils will be provided. Guests will enjoy 320 bushels of steamed on-site large #1 Maryland male blue crabs (the big ones) plus:

                – 100 gallons of Maryland vegetable crab soup,

                – 3,400 ears of sweet Maryland corn on the cob,

                – 150 pounds of beef barbeque sandwiches,

                – 1,800 All-American hot dogs,

                – and hundreds of gallons of draft beer and assorted sodas and water.

A bake sale and cake raffle can finish your feast with sweetness. Watermelon Queens  from Maryland and surrounding states will slice and serve fresh cool watermelon. Also for sale will be Crab Feast T-shirts and other memorabilia as well as cash raffle tickets.

Nearly 2,000 people are expected to attend. Parking on the stadium grounds is free. The crab feast will be held rain or shine, as most of the tables are protected from the weather. No containers, drinks, backpacks, large bags, coolers or similar items will be allowed into the event.

“While it is an all-you-can-eat affair, and you can take all you want, please eat all you take,” Ms. Weber says. “If you have more crabs than you need, please share with a neighbor. This will reduce waste and help preserve a precious natural resource.”

And, as in recent past years, the event is 100% recyclable. The club continues to work with Annapolis Green to recycle all the waste. The resulting compost will be available for sale later this fall.
