Filmsters Academy

Filmsters AcademyFILMSTERS Academy, a summer film camp for kids is proud to announce that they are celebrating 15 years this summer. Over 138 short films have been produced, shot, directed, acted in and edited by kids 11-18 years of age. In the fifteen-year time span over 800 students have attended film camp, which offers three levels of instruction. The program takes place this summer from August 1st through August 8, 2016.

FILMSTERS Academy was co-founded in 2002, by Lee Anderson and Patti White, nationally credited TV producers and filmmakers. The duo are also the brains behind the successful Annapolis Film Festival which they co-founded together and is now heading into its 5th year.

Filmsters AcademyEach student will have the opportunity to conceive, pitch, write, shoot, produce, direct, act in and edit a short film over the course of 5, 10 or 14 days depending upon their level of expertise and experience. At the end of the program, they will present their work to family and friends at film festival on Friday, August 12th in the Key School Activity Building. This screening of these ten 5-20 minute short films are free and open to the public.

“Many graduates have moved to NY and LA and are working in the industry. There’s a real place for this in the community,” says Ms. White, who’s won three national Emmy awards for her film work.

“There are theater camps and acting camps, but not many film camps. Many focus on the technical alone, we focus on learning how to tell a good story. We are doing this because we really want to give back to kids in this community.”

Filmsters AcademyThe film camp was created by and is taught by award-winning filmmakers Patti Obrow White and Lee Anderson of FILMSTERS who are the co-founders and festival directors of the new Annapolis Film Festival now head into its fifth successful year.  The duo, have been operating FILMSTERS Academy, affectionately known as “film camp” in Annapolis for the past twelve years. Behind the scenes, FILMSTERS Academy has a very experienced and talented production and teaching team. Staff are young working professionals who are graduates of film schools such as NYU, New York School for the Arts, University of Texas at Austin, Elon, Ithaca College, North Western, Emerson, BU, Savannah College of Art & Design, American University, Chapman University and others.

Filmsters Academy“We have an 80-85% return rate at film camp. Most kids average 4-5 years of film camp as they move thru the levels. We are with them as they grow creatively each year. So not only are we growing young filmmakers and seeing them get into some of the top film schools in the country; FILMSTERS Academy has also become a professional network for the young professionals who teach each summer and then move on to New York of LA. Everyone ends up helping everyone and that is just great. It is a legacy that keeps on going. It’s a culture and a family and it’s very exciting, to see it grow year after year,” says Lee Anderson, co-founder.

Now in its 15th year, the well-established and respected film camp’s reputation is growing as it attracts terrific guest instructors. First time feature film director, Marlee Roberts, who directed the feature film LITTLE MISS PERFECT which screened at the Annapolis Film Festival is coming in as supervising director for the Advanced filmmaking program of FILMSTERS Academy for students ages 16-18. Musician Logan Nyman will provide the scoring of the music for films. There are three levels for Beginners (11-14) two one week programs, Intermediates (13-16) a 10 day program and Advanced (ages 16-18) a comprehensive 14 day program. FILMSTERS Academy in Annapolis will be held at the Key School, 534 Hillsmere Drive in Annapolis.

“If you ask us what we are the most proud of in creating this program, it would be the fact that we’ve managed to create a 100% non-competitive, creative learning environment that is just plain fun,” says Anderson. ”It’s fun. Almost anything can happen at film camp. We’ve had lots and lots of drama, but somehow in the end, we put it on the screen in time for the film festival. The audience is always amazed at what these kids can do with their imagination and the right tools.”
