Baysox drop finale to split series with Thunder

Baysox 2016Prince George’s Stadium was the site of a pitcher’s duel Thursday, but the Thunder came out ahead with a  2-1 victory over the Baysox to split the four-game series. These two teams were very evenly matched as they both scored a total of 13 runs each in the series.

Through five innings of action, both starting pitchers held the other team scoreless. However, in the top of the sixth inning the Thunder and Kyle Higashioka broke the scoreless tie with a solo home run to left field off Baysox starter Brandon Barker to lead-off the inning. Miguel Andujar followed with a double to left field and moved to third base on a Mark Payton sacrifice bunt. Cito Culver then doubled to right field to bring Andujar home and give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. That would prove to be all the offense needed on the night.

In their final at bat, Bowie broke through to end the shutout bid. With Trenton reliever Jonathan Holder looking for the six-out save, Chris O’Brien drew a lead-off walk but was forced out at second base when pinch-hitter Tucker Nathans reached on a fielder’s choice. With two outs, Nathans moved to second base on defensive indifference and scored on a Julio Borbon single to center field to make the final score 2-1.

Barker threw 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two in the loss. Reliever Donnie Hart threw 1.2 scoreless innings behind Barker, allowing one hit with a strikeout. Reliever Bobby Bundy threw two scoreless innings to finish out the game for the Baysox, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out one batter.

Trenton starter Jordan Montgomery threw seven scoreless innings in the win, allowing six hits and striking out four while walking two batters.

The Baysox head to Reading on Friday for a three-game series before the 2016 Eastern League All-Star Break. The season resumes Thursday, July 14 as the Baysox open a four-game home series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels.
