Baysox squander early lead

Baysox 2016In a game that featured the top three hitters in the Eastern League (Raimel Tapia, Garabez Rosa and Chance Sisco) it was the offense that reigned in a game that featured hits and runs galore. After jumping out to leads of 4-0 and 6-3 courtesy of three home runs, the Baysox squandered that lead late in a 10-9 loss to the Hartford Yard Goats.

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Hyun Soo Kim played with the Baysox on Major League Rehab Assignment for a second game. He hit second, played left field and played six innings in the field, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run and a single.

Drew Dosch has made a thing of hitting lead-off home runs as of late and he did not disappoint this evening. On the third pitch of the bottom of the first inning, Dosch hit a lead-off home run to right field off Hartford starter Alex Balog. With two outs, Chance Sisco and Sharlon Schoop hit back-to-back singles before Joey Terdoslavich brought them both home with the Baysox second home run of the inning to right-center field to make the score 4-0.

A theme for the night is that when the Baysox score, the Yard Goats came right back and put runs of their own on the scoreboard. In the top of the second inning, Ryan McMahon hit a lead-off single to center field off Baysox starter Jayson Aquino and Rosell Herrera followed with a bunt single. With one out, Jackson Williams brought a run home with a single to center field before things began to unravel with two outs. Raimel Tapia reached on a single and fielding error by Baysox shortstop Adrian Marin that allowed one run to score and Pat Valaika followed with an RBI single to right field that cut the Baysox lead to 4-3.

Dosch led off the bottom half of the second frame and drew a two-out walk and Kim followed with a long home run to right field to give the Baysox a 6-3 lead.

Once again, the Yard Goats had an immediate answer. McMahon hit a one-out single to right field but was thrown out when Herrera reached on a fielder’s choice. Ashley Graeter followed with a single to right field to put runners on the corners before singles from Williams and Juan Ciriaco plated a pair of runs to make the score 6-5.

In the bottom of the third inning, Schoop hit a lead-off single to center field and Terdoslavich followed with a walk. A Chris O’Brien fly-out advanced both runners before Marin brought Schoop home on a groundout to extend the Baysox lead to 7-5.

To make it four consecutive innings with a run to start the game, the Yard Goats plated three more runs on four hits. Pat Valaika started it off when he hit a lead-off ground-rule double to center field and scored after a pair of groundouts before a McMahon double to right field. Reliever Michael Zouzalik then replaced Aquino on the mound and surrendered an RBI double to Herrera followed by a Graeter walk. Williams then singled to center field to bring home the third run of the inning and give the Yard Goats an 8-7 lead.

Sisco hit a lead-off double to left field in the bottom of the fifth. He moved to third base on a Schoop sacrifice bunt and scored on a Terdoslavich single to right field to tie the game 8-8.

To begin the seventh inning, with Reliever Tanner Scott in to pitch, singles from Graeter and Ciriaco plus a Williams walk loaded the bases with no outs. Then with two outs, Dillon Thomas singled to center field to plate two runs and give Hartford the 10-8 lead.

In their final at bat the Baysox attempted to mount a rally. After a lead-off walk by Quincy Latimore, who came in for Kim, Sisco singled to left-field. Terdoslavich came up and walked on four consecutive pitches to load the bases. Chris O’Brien followed with a walk of his own to score Latimore and cut the lead in half 10-9. However, the Baysox were not able to plate anymore runs and were defeated.

Aquino threw 3.2 innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits while striking out one and walking one in a no decision. Zouzalik threw 2.1 innings and allowed one run on two hits and a walk. Scott threw one inning and allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and strikeout in the loss. Reliever Donnie Hart pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Baysox in his first outing back in Bowie after a stint with the Orioles. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the Baysox.

Reliever Matt Pierpont earned the win for Hartford, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and striking out two.
