Nothing starts off a week like a live concert. Matt & Kim opened up for Ellie Goulding at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, last night. The Brooklyn based duo are known for their base heavy indie dance music and hilarious stage banter, which there was plenty of last night. Interlaced within their set were dance breaks of popular hip-hop songs which kept the crowd moving. Fans could not help but enjoy the energetic performance of upbeat songs and constant dancing.
Matt & Kim do put on a performance when they hit the stage it is non-stop body movement from one or the other until the set is done. The surprising thing is they are able to get that energy and reaction with very little production. Most of their set is just the duo playing drums and piano. Not a lot of crazy lights, though there was some lighting. No confetti or backup dancers, the energy comes directly from Matt & Kim and their music.
After Matt & Kim it was Ellie Goulding’s turn to light up Merriweather. Ellie’s performance was much more theatrical. Adorning the stage were two gold curtains pulled to the side of the stage from the center and three very large LED screens. In the ceiling of the set were mirrors which made very cool effects with the high levels of lighting used on this tour.
Ellie came on stage with a set of backup dancers whom she had a few choreographed moves with during “After taste”. There were a few times when Goulding would walk off stage and let the dancer perform to a part of her song like “On My Mind”. It looked and felt like a music video come to life, especially with the screens in the background adding to the experience.
Goulding has an amazing vocal range. It was showed in her songs like “Army” and “Lost and Found”. She also turned a couple of her songs into more slow ballads than pop hits. She did this with “Lights” and it was a wonderful styling that the fans enjoyed. Ellie did more than just dance and sing, she also played guitar for one of her songs and drums during multiple others. She is truly a well rounded performer.
Things took a bit of a turn into politics which was not expected but more than welcome. Many fans had signs that said “Love Conquers Hate #Orlando” , another fan had a sign in rainbow letters that said “Fuck Donald Trump”. Ellie asked if she could keep the sign she agreed with its message so much. That message of LGBTQ support was brought up again during the encore finale the performance, where Ellie donned rainbow colored wings with “freedom” written on them. On the screens were rainbow colors, and flags. It was beautiful to see such support coming from Ellie and her fans.
There are only a couple more shows for this tour but tickets are still available here. Be sure to grab Matt & Kims latest album here, and watch their new music video Lets Run Away.
