A dedication ceremony was held Thursday, May 19, on the Hospice of the Chesapeake John & Cathy Belcher Campus in Pasadena for the Rebecca Fortney Inpatient Care Center. The intimate gathering of the nonprofit’s leadership team, board members, volunteers and Fortney’s friends and family was followed by a reception in the non-profit’s conference center.

A 31-year resident of Annapolis, Rebecca Fortney died in July 2013 at her second home in Colorado. Her estate included a heartfelt gift of approximately $2 million to Hospice of the Chesapeake’s Caring for Life Campaign.  Fortney was known for her compassion, generosity and optimism, all valuable traits that served the Hospice of the Chesapeake Foundation well in her six years as a member of the Board of Directors.

As she was known for her sincere interest in the lives of the people she met, it should come as no surprise that she started her professional life as a social worker at Prince George’s Hospital before becoming a successful real estate agent and developer. She gave personally, authentically and generously to many organizations in the area.

“We are honored and humbled to be a part of Becky Fortney’s legacy,” said President and CEO Ben Marcantonio. “Her contagious spirit will live on each and every day as we care for those living with advanced illness and strive to reduce suffering in our community.”
