Garcia shines as Baysox sink Sea Dogs

Baysox 2016For the second night in a row the Baysox jumped all over a Portland Sea Dog starter in the early innings of the game. Thirteen more hits and a dominant outing by Baysox starter Jason Garcia were more than enough to give the Baysox the 6-1 win.

Garcia had by far his best outing of the season as he threw six shutout innings and surrendered just five hits while walking three and striking out a season-high six Sea Dogs batters.

Baltimore Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy played his third game with the Baysox on a Minor League Rehab Assignment. He again batted second and started the game at shortstop, playing all nine innings. He finished the game 1-for-5 with a single.

The game saw its first runs courtesy of Bowie in the bottom of the second inning off Portland starter Keith Couch.  Garabez Rosa hit a lead-off single to center field and Henry Urrutia followed with a single to left field. Joey Terdoslavich brought everyone home with a home run to right field to give the Baysox an early 3-0 lead.

The Baysox struck again in the bottom of the fourth. Adrian Marin hit a lead-off single to right field and moved to second base on a Glynn Davis sacrifice bunt. Tucker Nathans followed with a walk and Hardy then singled to center field to load the bases. Chance Sisco singled to right field to bring one run home and Rosa followed with a groundout to shortstop that plated a second run to extend the Baysox lead to 5-0.

With the score still at 5-0 in favor of Bowie in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bowie got to Portland reliever Ty Buttrey. With two outs, Davis singled to center field and scored on a Nathans single to center field to make the score 6-0.

Portland avoided the shutout with a run in the top of the eighth inning against Baysox reliever Bobby Bundy. Cody Decker hit a two-out double to left field and scored on a Cole Sturgeon single up the middle to make the final score 6-1.

Bundy threw two innings in relief and allowed one run on two hits while striking out two batters. Reliever Donnie Hart threw a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Couch took the loss for Portland, throwing five innings and allowing five runs on nine hits while striking out two and walking three batters.

The Baysox leave for Erie Friday to play a three-game weekend series. The Baysox return homeTuesday, June 21 for a six-game homestand against the Trenton Thunder and Altoona Curve. RHP David Hess (3-5, 3.96) will make the start for Bowie and he will be opposed by RHP Myles Jaye (2-5, 4.18).
