Food as art at Maryland Hall: RIPE! Fruit and Vegetable Perspectives

AubergineJan Kirsh, sculptor and prominent landscape designer based on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, has announced her exhibition, “RIPE! Fruit and Vegetable Perspectives.” The show will run from September 10 – October 26, 2016 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (801 Chase Street Annapolis, Md) with a public opening reception to be held from 5:30 – 7:00 PM on Thursday September 15th.

Treasurer on the Board of Directors at the Maryland Hall for Creative Arts and patron of several pieces of Kirsh’s sculpture, Nancy Politsch, invites visitors to delight in the garden of Kirsh’s whimsical and evocative imagination. “Jan’s work is alluring. She embodies motion and emotion into each piece. Her color palette pops and each piece makes me smile. Fruits and vegetables at their most enticing.”

The RIPE! exhibit will feature a hand-picked sculpture selection that captures the breadth of Kirsh’s work and the freedom afforded by digital technology in the creation of scalable art in various shapes, sizes and materials. Vegetable and fruit sculptures of vivid color and sensuous form will be showcased, including newly completed work, “Pomegranates,” “Patricia’s Carrots,” and “Caper Plates,” a line of vegetable-inspired dinnerware. Kirsh will also display wearable art such as her “Pear” and “Onion” pendants – small, elegant versions of the original, larger forms. Sculpted by hand in oil-based clay, Kirsh’s pieces are cast, then refined, and ultimately fabricated in materials suitable for indoor or outdoor display. Scanning and modeling technologies allow them to be made in bronze, resin, fiberglass, and stone – and in virtually any size and color.

Imagining how a viewer might experience the dimensional space, I want to orchestrate a symphony of visually dynamic conversations among the pieces,” she said.

Kirsh’s work is currently on exhibit regionally at Bartlett Pear Inn, South Street Art Gallery and Academy Art Museum (Easton, Md) and on the Eastern Shore of Virginia at Red Queen Gallery (Onancock, Md), and Ellen Moore Gallery (Cape Charles, Md). Two Jan Kirsh Studio sculptures were selected as winners for year-long, outdoor displays as part of the ARTsites 2015 Competition and Exhibit to increase community access to the arts in Howard County. Her “Aubergine” sculpture offers a focal point and vibrant welcome for Howard County Welcome Center visitors (Ellicott City, Md) and her “Chile 2” is now on display at the Robinson Nature Center (Columbia, Md) encouraging children to explore the wonders of nature. Additionally, Jan Kirsh Studio vegetable sculptures, “Asparagus”, “Companionable Chiles” “Ichiban Eggplant,” and “Taos” were selected last fall for two Maryland Federation of Arts shows in Bethesda and College Park.
