Ducks squeeze out 2-1 win against Baysox in pitcher’s duel

Baysox 2016Pitching was at a premium Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium. The game featured a pitching duel that did not see the first runs of the game until the seventh inning. Clutch hitting from the RubberDucks propelled Akron to the narrow 2-1 victory. With the loss, Bowie is now a season-low 13 games under .500.

In his best outing of the year, Jason Garcia tied his career-high by throwing six scoreless two hit innings, but in the end it was not enough as he was credited with his third no decision of the year. Akron starter Rob Kaminsky was brilliant as well. He threw five scoreless innings and only surrendered a lone hit, while striking out three Baysox batters, but took the no decision as well as he left the game with the score tied 0-0.

In the top of the seventh inning Stefan Crichton came on in relief for Bowie. For the second time in as many nights, an Akron catcher provided the turning point in the game. Jeremy Lucas broke a scoreless tie with a two-out solo home run to left field.

The RubberDucks made it consecutive scores in the top of the eighth when Taylor Murphy hit a lead-off single and moved to second base via a sacrifice bunt. After moving to third base on a groundout, Murphy scored on a Todd Hankins single to center field to make the score 2-0.

For the second night in a row Bowie showed their resilience as they attempted to mount a rally in their last at bat. Consecutive singles off the bats of Garabez Rosa and Chance Sisco put runners on the corners with one out. After Drew Dosch hit a sac fly to score Rosa from third base Julio Borbon came into the game to pinch run for Sisco and immediately stole second base. The threat was thwarted and the game ended with Quincy Latimore striking out representing the game winning run.

Reliever Louis Head earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings in relief, allowing two hits and striking out four batters. Crichton earned the loss after throwing 1.2 innings and allowing both RubberDucks runs.

The Baysox are home through Sunday, June 5 for a four-game homestand against the Akron RubberDucks. The homestand concludes with a visit from Daniel Tiger Sunday afternoon during a single-admission doubleheader starting at 1:05 p.m.
