Baysox shock Ducks in double header sweep

In their fifth doubleheader on the season, the Baysox earned their second sweep of the year after shutting out the RubberDucks, 6-0 in the first game and rallying late to win the second game, 12-7. Bowie’s bats were alive and well as they knocked 12 hits in each game. The two victories couldn’t have come in more opposite fashion. The game 1 victory was undoubtedly due to Jayson Aquino’s complete game shut-out and game 2 was an improbable victory due to a nine run two-out late inning rally.

Game 1

Baysox2016In the bottom of the first inning facing Eastern League wins and ERA leader Shawn Morimando the Baysox struck first. Julio Borbon hit a lead-off infield single that deflected off the pitcher. He moved to second base on a wild pitch and then scored on a Henry Urrutia single to center field. Urrutia then tried to go first to third on a Garabez Rosa single to right field but was thrown out as Rosa moved to second base on the play. After a Chance Sisco groundout moved Rosa to second base, Quincy Latimore brought him home with a double to left field to make the score 2-0.

The Baysox tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Latimore hit a one out single to left field by was forced out at second base when Jeff Kemp reached on a fielder’s choice for the second out of the inning. Austin Wynns then drew a walk before Drew Dosch brought Kemp home with a single to center field. Adrian Marin followed with another single to center field to plate a second run and give the Baysox a 4-0 lead.

Urrutia led-off the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead-off double to center field and moved to third base on a two-out wild pitch. Latimore followed with a single to center field to score Urrutia and give the Baysox a 5-0 lead. Akron reliever Nick Maronde replaced Morimando on the mound to record the final out of the inning.

The Baysox were not done. They made it three consecutive scoring innings as Austin Wynns hit a lead-off single to center field and Dosch then drew a walk. Dosch was put-out at second base when Marin reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners on the corners and Borbon followed with his third hit of the game, an RBI single to right field to make the score 6-0.

Baysox starter Jayson Aquino had his best outing of the season and threw a seven-inning complete game shutout, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out eight in the win. Over his last two starts, he has thrown 15 shutout innings with 15 strikeouts.

Morimando took the loss for Akron throwing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out three and walking one batter.

Game 2

Baysox starter David Richardson made his Double-A debut in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Unfortunately, he did not have the start he was hoping for as RubberDucks Todd Hankins and Taylor Murphy hit back-to-back home runs to lead off the game. With one out, Nellie Rodriguez and Jeremy Lucas were hit by pitches in back-to-back at-bats. With two outs, Mike Papi drew a walk to load the bases and Alex Monsalve followed with a triple to right field to clear the bases and give Akron a 5-0 lead.

The Baysox would respond immediately. Facing Akron starter D.J. Brown, Julio Borbon hit a lead-off single to left field. With one out, Borbon went to second base on a balk and moved to third base on a Garabez Rosa single to left field. Chance Sisco singled to right field to bring Borbon home and made the score 5-1.

Both starting pitchers settled in nicely after the first inning. In the top of the fifth frame, Nellie Rodriguez ended the scoring drought with a  lead off solo home run to left field off of Baysox reliever Bobby Bundy to give the RubberDucks a 6-1 cushion.

Once again, the Baysox had an answer. Urrutia led the next half inning with a lead-off walk and Rosa followed with a single to right field. Sisco singled to center field to load the bases before a Latimore groundout brought one run home. Rosa then scored on a wild pitch to cut the Akron lead in half, 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Baysox recorded their highest scoring inning of the season. After two quick outs, a Bowie rally ensued starting with Borbon hitting a double to right-center field. Urrutia followed with a single to left center to advance Borbon to third. Rosa continued his hot hitting, with his fifth hit of the doubleheader, and tripled to right to score Borbon and Urrutia. Sisco walked on four straight balls to put runners on the corners. Latimore singled through the hole at second base to score Rosa and chase reliever Cole Sulser out of the game. Grant Sides came on in relief to attempt to get the final out of the inning, but the rally continued. Sides walked Terdoslavich, Dosch and Marin consecutively to put the Baysox ahead, 8-6.  On a 2-2 count, Glynn Davis hit a grand slam to left field to extend the Bowie lead, 12-6.

Reliever Jason Stoffel came on in the top of the ninth inning. After getting Jeremy Lucas to strike out, Joe Sever knocked his first home run of the season for the final run of the afternoon and make the final score, 12-7.

Richardson threw three innings and allowed five runs on four hits while striking out six and walking three in the loss. Bundy threw two innings and allowed one run on one hit while striking out two batters. Relievers Donnie Hart and Jason Stoffel combined to throw the final two innings, with Hart getting the win as he improved to (2-0) on the season.

After an off day Monday, the Baysox will fly to Portland, Maine to begin a six-game roadtrip in the Northwest. The Baysox return home Tuesday, June 14 for a three-game home series against the Portland Sea Dogs.
