Baysox lose in 13

Baysox 2016After being held to one hit in a shutout Thursday, it looked like the Baysox would reverse their fortunes as they rolled to five early runs to take a 4-0 lead. But the good luck did not last as the Baysox were held scoreless for the next nine innings as the Akron RubberDucks rallied for a 7-6 win in a 13-inning affair.

In the bottom of first inning the Baysox wasted no time on putting yesterday’s game behind them. Henry Urrutia extended his hitting streak to eight by hitting a lead-off single off Akron starter Adam Plutko to right field and moved to second base on a two-out Chance Sisco single to center field. Tucker Nathans brought one run home with a single to center field and Joey Terdoslavich finished the job with a three-run home run to right-center field to give the Baysox a 4-0 lead.

In the next half inning Eric Haase hit a one-out double down the left field line off Baysox starter Brandon Barker and moved to third base on a wild pitch before Mike Papi walked to put runners on the corners. Joe Sever followed with a ground ball to shortstop that scored Haase as the Baysox failed to turn the double play to make the score 4-1.

Henry Urrutia continued his hot hitting in the bottom of the third frame. He hit a lead-off double to center field, moved to third base on a Garabez Rosa groundout and scored on a Chance Sisco sacrifice fly to make the score 5-1.

The first three hits Barker allowed were all doubles. The third came in the top of the fifth inning off the bat of Mike Papi. Sever was then hit-by-a-pitch. With one out, Todd Hankins singled to center field to load the bases before Clint Frazier cleared the bases with a double to left field to cut the Baysox lead to 5-4.

Genison Reyes relieved Barker in the seventh inning. Akron manufactured a run after Ivan Castillo drew a lead-off walk and then stole second base and scored on a Bradley Zimmer two-out double to right field to tie the game 5-5.

It was all zeros on the board next five innings. Jon Keller, Bowie’s seventh pitcher of the night, came into the game to pitch the 13th inning.  Akron completed the comeback starting with Nellie Rodriguez drawing a lead-off walk and Haase following with a one-out home run to right field to give the RubberDucks a 7-5 lead.

Bowie showed their grit and attempted to mount a rally in the bottom of the 13th. Urrutia knocked his fourth hit of the game, a lead-off single to right field. After a wild pitch that put Urrutia on second base, he advanced to third off of a Garabez Rosa single up the middle. Sisco garnered his second RBI of the day on a single to right field that scored Urrutia. With men on second and first and no outs, the Baysox were not able to muster another run home and lost the game 7-6.

Barker threw six innings and allowed four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking one in the no decision. Reyes pitched the seventh inning and allowed one run on one hit and one walk while striking out two batters. Relievers Donnie Hart and Jason Stoffel combined to throw two scoreless innings to send the game to extra innings. Reliever Jimmy Yacabonis did not allow a hit over two innings of work, striking out four batters and Bobby Bundy pitched a scoreless 12th inning, allowing one hit and one walk with a strikeout. Keller was credited with the loss after throwing one inning of work and allowing two runs on two hits while walking two and striking out two RubberDucks batters.

Reliever Robbie Aviles picked up the win for Akron, throwing the final two innings of the game and allowing one run on three hits.
