Baysox cap series with 5-2 loss to Altoona

Baysox 2016The early innings have been key to each game this series. Today’s contest was no exception, as the team who got off to a quick start would not relinquish the lead. Unfortunately, for the Baysox, the Curve had the big first inning in today’s rubbermatch. Runs in the first three innings were all the offense needed for Altoona as they won, 5-2, over Bowie.

Baltimore Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph played his final game with the Baysox on a Major League Rehab Assignment, batting third as the designated hitter. Joseph finished the game 0-for-3 with a walk.

The Curve, determined to get off to a hot start got going when Erich Weiss hit a one out double to left field off of Baysox starter John Means. Harold Ramirez followed with an infield single to shortstop before Edwin Espinal’s two-out three-run home run to left field put the Curve up 3-0.

After their three-run first inning, the Curve offense was on the attack again in the top of the second frame. Eric Wood led off the inning with a solo home run to left field to give Altoona a 4-0 lead.

For the third time in as many at bats the Curve would put a run on the scoreboard. Weiss hit a lead-off single to center field and stole second base before moving to third base on a groundout. With two outs, Weiss scored on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0.

The Baysox scored their only two runs of the day in the sixth inning.  Julio Borbon hit a two-out double to right field and Garabez Rosa followed with a home run to left field to make the score 5-2.

Means threw three innings and allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out one in the loss. Reliever Michael Zouzalik followed with three scoreless innings, allowing three hits. Bobby Bundy threw scoreless seventh and eighth innings for the Baysox, striking out three batters. Stefan Crichton completed a sixth scoreless inning for the bullpen, allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

Altoona starter Alex McRae earned the win for Altoona, throwing seven innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five batters.

The Baysox head to Harrisburg Monday to open a seven-game road trip before returning home Monday, July 4 for a series against Trenton. Monday, RHP Brandon Barker (3-1, 3.86) will pitch for the Baysox and he will be opposed by RHP Lucas Giolito (5-3, 3.17).
