Schuh’s idea to privatize school healthcare off table, for now

aacpsAnne Arundel County Councilman Jerry Walker just released the following statement:

The County Executive has just sent the Council a memo informing us that he will not pursue changes in the FY17 budget which is the upcoming 16/17 school year. Any potential changes will be recommended in next years budget (May of 2017). This is exactly what we the Council asked the administration to do…put the decision off for a year and collaborate with all of the impacted parties. I want to commend the School Health employees and all the parents who rallied at the Arundel Center, testified, called, and emailed asking for a transparent and collaborative process, not a back room deal. We still have work to do but this is a huge relief.

County Executive Schuh had put out a request for proposals to look into the possibility of privatizing the health care in the county’s schools.  This initiative was met with strong resistance from the Department of Health, the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, the school nurses, as well as parents.

However, according to this memo from Councilman Walker, it may be a consideration in later years.

Schuh said that he was approached by a school nurse decrying the low wages and substandard benefits offered to nurses; which prompted him to look at other options.
